What Fishing Lines in 1971?

Saw a note on BassFan about Seaguar and the development of fluorocarbon, with a link to a timeline described as “very cool.” I love the BF guys, but if that’s what passes for very cool these days I’ll stick with my yo-yo.

Anyhow, a couple clicks later on the Seaguar site and I’m in interviews – sorta – with Denny and Chad Brauer. They were both asked the same questions, one of which was:

What type of fishing line(s) were you using in 1971?

Lemme see. Was it horsehair? Nah. Silk? Nope. Maybe it was linen….

Oh yeah: mono!

Seriously: This is a question from a line company? Correct me if I have a memory gap here, but mono is all there was until the ’80s.

That’s here in the U.S., anyway. The Seaguar timeline has fluorocarbon being patented in Japan in 1966 and intro’d to Japanese fishermen in 1971 (hence the above question and publicity 30 years later). But looks from that timeline that Seaguar didn’t intro a full-on fluoro line (not just leader) in the U.S. until the 2000s.

Anyhow, here are Denny and Chad’s responses:

Denny: In 1971 I am sure I was using mono.
Chad: Zip. Nada. Nothing. See answer to first question.

Chad’s answer to the first question – What were you doing in 1971 when Seaguar invented fluorocarbon? – is: “I was not born until 1972, so fluorocarbon is older than me.”

Pretty dang funny!

Great story! Another fact… Cuttyhunk Line Spools were made of Wood not Plastic. A full spool as pictured would go for about $40 on eBay to Collectors. I have several in my hoard. It was the first fishing line I used in 1971. I was about 4 and my grandfather sore by the linen, until he had to pick out all my birds nests….
