Today’s Top 3

1. First A-rig B.A.S.S. win: Douglas, TN Open.

Last year the highest the A-rig factored in any Bassmaster Open was 2nd. As of this weekend, it’s now in the win column.

1st, 2nd, 3rd and prob’ly many more places at the Douglas Open spent 3 days chunkin’ and windin’ various A-rig versions. Not sure yet which exact A-rig won it because Bassmaster.com and BassFan.com haven’t reported on it yet…!

Only pattern tidbit worth repeating here is that the winner and runner-up caught their fish off the bank in 8-15′, 3rd caught ’em in 4-5′.

Here’s the winner, Pat Bone. Bone, not Boone.

2. I stayed away from the places that got the most fishing pressure…and hit underwater rockpiles…that nobody else knows about.

– Douglas Open runner-up, TN’s David Mullins, talkin’ ’bout his A-rig spots.

Uh…seriously? No one else knows about it? Got two words for you:

David Fritts.

3. MS dude’s 7th FLW back-of-boat win.

Most impressive, young Skywalker:

> When it comes to winning tournaments from the back of the boat, no one does it better than Alan Hults of Gautier, Miss. Hults’ co-angler winning record which includes a BFL, two FLW Series and now four EverStart Series wins thanks to his recent victory at Lake Seminole.

> In all, Hults has won over $150,000 from the back deck [!!!!] and that does not include the one time he entered an FLW Series as a pro and won that event as well.

> Hults’ Seminole win was a perfect ending to a storybook chapter in Hults’ fishing career as he and his wife Sandi will soon be relocating to Canada for a few years to work for Chevron.

Don’t they have basses in Canadia?

News

1. Diet Dew sponsors B.A.S.S., Swindleɉ۬

…for 1 year, but shoulda sponsored Bassmaster.com’s Steve Bowman, who drinks enough Dew to kill most large African game animals. Didja show them your office fridge, Bowman??

This is Bowman’s breakfast. Every dang day.

lol

2. Quagga mussels now in Powell, AZ.

Guess anglers there will soon get hassled for not dry-cleaning their boats…. Spread of these things is inevitable, man.

3. Jenkinsville, SC sponsoring smallie derby.

Anyone have the deets?

Tip of the Day

FLW’s Randall Tharp: Visualizing beds.

> You don’t have to see bedding fish to be able to catch them. Most of the spawning fish I catch are ones that I didn’t see at first.

> What I try to do is visualize where a bed might be – say, an isolated stump or by a corner post on a dock – and fish it as if I was looking at the bass.

> If the water is still in the 50s, I’m fishing a jig. If I’m just in an area where I think bass might be moving in, such as a cove out of the wind where the bank gradually slopes down, I’ll be throwing a crankbait, spinnerbait or Chatterbait.

> The main thing is that you don’t want to wait until everything is textbook-perfect for the spawn. Be out there when the fish arrive.

Quote of the Day

There’s no point trying to put a pretty face on things.

Ike talking about his crappy start on the Elites. Also said:

> I’ve gotten off to a bad start this year. Sitting in 73rd place in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings is not my idea of success.

> Make no mistake about professional bass fishing at the Elite Series level – it’s competitive. If you don’t go all out for the win and give it everything you’ve got, you’ll lose. There’s no in between.

Sock lint. That’s the only in between.

Sorry. Long weekend….
