Ever See Mechanical Rod Holders?

My local lake is deep and clear. Smallies, largies but also a lot of stocked trout, so you always see downrigger types out there.

Yesterday morning I’m driving by, it’s raining, one boat on the water about 100 yards from me, circling out of a cove. I see rods sticking up in the rod holders, start not to pay attention, and then: WTH?

Blink a couple times, but sure enough the two rods on the two corners of the stern are jerking up and down by themselves! Has anyone ever seen this before?!

I guess another question is, Does that really work for trout? Always thought those were a strict troll at a certain speed critter, and mostly lower in the water column than I’m assuming these rods were working.

Did some Googling, found zip, probably because I don’t know where to look.

I did find this vid about a product (not the one I’m talking about above) that seems to take away one of the most-fun things about fishing: the hookset. That pic up top has my favorite line of the video, which I think was not meant to be funny!

looks like one of those liquid filled birds that drink from a water glass.

It is quite common for a trout to hit at the “pause” of a bait, wether it’s fly or hard bait. So I see no reason why it wouldn’t work if it had the right cadence.
