Elites Classic Wild Card what?, $400 lure, best bass auction ever

Welcome to Jay Kumar’s BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o’ bassin’!

Today’s Top 5

1. All 2013 Elites invited back.

> Next year’s field size could be as large as 115 anglers, but that number likely won’t be reached as several among the bottom 10 are expected to depart voluntarily.

> “All entry fees generated from this expansion will be applied to the Elite Series payouts. B.A.S.S. will determine an equitable distribution of the prize money.”

Bravo…I think. Have a feeling I’m missing something…?

2. Elites not happy happy about Wild Card.

Very good article on Bassin’Fan:

> Clunn: “The Classic is the most sacred event we have and I want to earn my way into it. I fish some of the Opens, but I don’t like that you can win one of those and get in, and I don’t like that you can win one Elite tournament and get in and do nothing the rest of the year.”

> “Those are spots that the Elite guys have invested their lives and their money into for the whole year. Now guys who fished the Opens and did nothing, relatively speaking, are going to get a shot at the Bassmaster Classic.”

> The event, which could potentially generate $350,000 in entry fees, will pay out only $80,000. “I just don’t think it’s right for a tournament organization to keep that much out of the entry fees,” Paul Elias said. “I pay way too much in entry fees already to go to a tournament that’s taking so much out of the payouts.”

Looks like Phil ain’t happy happy either:

3. Who’s goin’ to the Classic again?

On that note, used to know, with no brain-hurty, who was goin’ to the Bassin’master Classic – meaning how they got there. Pros + Federation guys = done. Now I can’t keep track.

Got the Elites, Angler of the Year, Open guys, Weekend Series, Nation guys, high school and college kids, the Wild Card and maybe some other I be forgettin’. Whoa.

Had an arteest buddy whip up a graphic to lay this out:

HAHA! Anyhow, are all these Classic qual routes a bad thing? Guess it depends whether you had enough coffee today. Don’t have an opinion, but will say this:

  • No matter who fishes it, the Classic will still be the biggest fishing tournament on the planet.
  • There’s gotta be a way for the Elites to make more dough at this game…bearing in mind that manufacturers (aka, sponsors) hugely value Elites (not just anyone) making the Classic.
  • Could be tougher to run B.A.S.S. than preside over the over-spending bunch o’ spoiled morons/ninnies that is our federal gumment.

4. Best bassin’ auction ever?

Lunch with Forrest Wood, fish with Palaniuk and/or Yelas, all kinds o’ fishin’ trips…TBF say:

5. What do you catch with a $400 lure?

A suckah! (Har-dee-har-har.) Guy who wrote that said:

> My first fishing boat didn’t cost that much.

> The Mother is 12 inches long and weighs 10.5 ounces. It resembles a big plastic perch. A Japanese fisherman reportedly caught a world record-tying bass on The Mother, and now (naturally) every fisherman wants one.

> I draw the line at casting out a car payment and risking getting it hung on a log.

More on the Mother, from its creator:

> We came up with the Mother swimbait to locate and capture giant bass over 70cm-80cm (27.5-31.5″) in Lake Biwa. We tried many different prototypes…and ended up settling on 30cm and 300 grams (11.8″, 10.5-oz). The results were different with this lure and fish showed more of a reaction to it.

> Not only would it catch smaller fish but it would drag out schools of several bass over 60cm (23.6″) often on Lake Biwa.

> I think the Mother swimbait offers an overwhelming sense of existence to the fish and has an instinctive power that varies from other lures.

I LOVE that! “An overwhelming sense of existence.” BAM! But…no way in heck am I buyin’ one.

From a BassBlaster reader: I like the fact that MegaStrike is a sponsor. I won a tube on the Texas Fishing Forum one time and now I swear by it! It’s great stuff.

Tip of the Day

Kevin Hawk: Dissect cover with a tube.

> When many of us approach a piece of cover, we’ll just flip and pitch wherever we can get our baits. Hawk, however, employs a methodical approach that allows him to cover water efficiently and avoid spooking nearby bass.

> “When I fish a laydown with a tube, I’m going to target its perimeter first so I can pick off the more aggressive fish using the cover as an ambush point for nearby bait,” Hawk said. “You don’t want to make your first pitch into the heart of the cover. If you catch one, it can spook the more accessible fish on the edges.”

> “Big bass love to eat a tube, so it usually won’t take dozens of casts to make them bite,” Hawk said. “If you can make six quality pitches that allow you to cover the front, middle and back of the cover, you’ve fished it thoroughly.”

Quote of the Day

Yet to have owned the fish for a few seconds, to see it in the air, suspended between outcomes, has to be enough.

– Bob Shacochis writing in Outside mag about losing a golden dorado somewhere in South America.

How awesome is that “suspended between outcomes” line?

One of the best pieces of fishing writing I’ve ever read – you can squeeze the juice from it too here.
