Today’s Top 3

1. 2 notable things about Biffle’s win:

1. He won this weekends upper Mississippi River Elite fishing his go-to bait – a Gene Larew-made Biffle HardHead jig (7/16-oz) with a Larew Biffle Bug (gr pump). Quote: “It’s always been great in rocks, but this is the first time I’ve ever fished it in pure sand.” All kinds of interesting ramifications of that statement you can apply to your own fishing.

Here’s the HardHead with a Bug in Sooner run (green pumpkin-ish):

2. “Expectations” was the word I used in an email to some of the B.A.S.S. folks before the tournament began. In other words, so many Elites figured the win would come with a topwater on grass, all signs pointed to a different outcome…which was the case for both Biffle and runner-up A-Mart (dropshot). Even Elites can have closed minds….

Off topic: Doesn’t this look like Tommy’s body with someone else’s legs??

2. Interesting upper Miss #s:

12

Number of times A-Mart has finished 2nd. Must be a record. I seriously wonder why this is.

B.A.S.S. is considering renaming the hot seat the “Aaron Martens seat of doom.”  Ha just kiddin’ Aaron!

24

Where KVD finished…in smallmouth water up north. What happened to the KVD domination trail? Welp, although he’s not in Bassin’Fan’s top 10 in the world, he is 3rd in the Elite AOY points.

6

Where last year’s uMiss Elite winner and this year’s Sabine River Elite winner Todd Faircloth finished. Todd is one of a few fishermen who can get the number of somewhere and keep it.

3. &^#*$(_% the MN fisheries dept!

Let’s pretend for a sec that we’re in the far distant future…2013. The passenger pigeon is extinct, the Model T has come and gone, boats have depthfinders with satellite-linked GPS, and recreational fishing has bass tournaments fished by bass anglers who do more good for local business and state fishery agencies than pretty much anything.

Now travel to MN, where the state fish is the walleye FILET (the hammer handle (aka, pike) a distant second), and everything else is trash. The same state where potential uMiss Elite winner Brandon Palaniuk got his day 2 weight DQd Friday because MN does not…allow…culling….

Here’s what our distinguished panel of judges said about that:

If I’m Rapala – a MN company – I’m going to chew out MN’s head of fisheries because my guy missed out on potentially millions of dollars worth of exposure due to a rule that should’ve died round about the time T Rex did. Sheesh.

News

1. Perry’s son: Long-lost WR photo sketchy?

> …got a call from George Perry’s son, George L. (Dazy) Perry, of Young Harris, GA. The junior Perry told Baab his father never wore a hat in all the years he knew him. He said he didn’t think the man in the photo was his father, except that “the fish looks right.”

Sure do:

2. Can you ID this rig…and fisherman?

Re: the rig:

> BOOYAH is set to introduce the next generation of fishing rigs at the upcoming ICAST show…gives anglers the ability to use a crankbait on a castable umbrella rig, and cast lightweight lures long distances on baitcasting gear. It allows you to fish crankbaits at any depth, and keep them in the strike zone nearly 100% of the cast.

Re: the fisherman, that’s a tough one….

All buzzbaits are not created equal!

Tip of the Day

Dion Hibdon: When to T-rig vs. shakey head.

> A Texas-rigged worm is a good choice for when bass aren’t actively feeding and might even be suspended a bit. You just drag it or swim it along slowly and give the bass plenty of time to make up their mind.

> A shakey head is better when bass are actively hunting for something to eat at the bottom. With the head on the bottom and the tail sticking up at an angle, it imitates a minnow that’s feeding on the bottom. I’ll give it some short hops and shake it once in a while before moving it again.

> [For shakey heads] I like the screw-in type of jigheads rather than the kind where you just Texas-rig the hook. I’ve found that the screw-in type will result in better hookups, especially for bigger fish.

Quote of the Day

The state is behind with the technology of the livewell.

MN angler talking about his own state’s crappy no-cull rule.

Not sure why this is the case since MN state law says every walleye boat must have a leech-well??

Shot of the Day

The longest fish ever from Fork? 11.7-lbs but 28.5″ = loooooooong! Believe this is the second-longest fish ever recorded out of Fork.
