9/11 is always a tough day in these parts. Thankful for breath today, and for all of you. Bear hug someone today you wouldn't normally – but don't end up in HR over it haha!

Today's Top 5

1. Pirch wins US Open.

Elite angler Cliff Pirch won it with a whopping 31.26 over 3 days at Lake Mead. Third time he won it, only A-Mart and Mike Folkestad have also done that. Stout.

How tough was it? "…the last two anglers who had the best shot to defeat him reported in with no fish…."

> Day 1: dropshotted a Roboworm (Pirch's purple)…culling out all but one of his early limit with a shad-colored crankbait….

> Day 2: returned to dropshotting again during the slick calm conditions….

> Day 3: pitched his signature 1/2-oz Clifford Pirch Outdoors Flippin' Jig to hardwood cover in the back of the Overton Arm. Alternated between black/blue and clay bank orange [awesome name] with craws.

Could not find the jig on his website….

2. Morgenthaler kills $60 Wiggle Wart.

Dang!

Would you cry? I might….

3. Open boat sinks.

Check this shot! (Click it to see way bigger.)

Here's the story, from BB reader Brett on that boat – and btw more than a few boats got their butts kicked on the big water last weekend:

> I was the co-angler and Chris Flint was the pro. It was the first day of the tournament and it happened on the way back to the weigh-in. We had to abandon the boat by jumping on to buoy marker 026 in the channel (thank God we made it to the buoy). With my cell phone I called 911 and the Coast Guard saved us.

> Although we did spear a wave or two, what caused the boat to sink was that the rubber molding that goes around the boat separated causing the shell of the boat to separate. When we would drive forward through the waves (winds were about 20 mph) water was forced into the hull without our knowledge. The bilge pumps could not keep up and the rest is history.

Whoa. Stoked the guys are okay.

4. Say bye to Mille Lacs smalls?

The Lindners lit up a storm on their Facebook page by publishing this shot with this text:

> I thought photos like this were a thing of the past. How disappointing it is to see this on one of the premier smallmouth lakes in North America.

Apparently a lot of people eat smallies? That's like this:

Gross.

5. Fishing not a sport??

Apparently badminton, cheerleading, bocce ball and even roller derby is more of a sport than fishin'?? Small sample size and it wasn't "pro bass fishin'," but still.

Cool news and an awesome shot and quote:

Thank you Jamey and a huge thanks to all the military folks – active, retired and families – out there.

PS I don't know enough about what all those things on Jamey's uniform are, but I do think I recognize that arched one. #bada**!

E-Z Crank 30+:

> Mann's has produced a lure designed to reach the same extreme depth as the original 30+, but with over 30% less resistance during retrieval.

> The patented lip design has been modified to allow the lure to slice through the water with a tighter wiggle, which will allow anglers the chance to fish more without wearing down from the pull of other deep-diving lures.

> Suggested retail $10.99.

5. Gator Guards HS/College program.

6. Cool jigs!

7. FLWer Watson gets Waft rods.

Tip of the Day

Palaniuk's ice bait secret.

Legit and I'm surprised he let it out:

> In the Cayuga Elite Series event, Brandon Palaniuk said he was keeping details of his tackle and tactics "locked down for now." It's time to set his secret free: In the heat of the summer he caught 'em on an ice-fishing bait – a Rapala Jigging Rap.

> "It's a little trick up my sleeve that I've kept secret for a long time. I've caught open-water fish on them all the way down to 70, 80 feet."

> "When you snap the rod, it will dart a foot or two off to the right, and then it falls super fast. And then you snap it again and it might dart two feet back over to the left – or forwards, or backwards. It's a constant change of direction."

> "The big thing is how erratic it is," Palaniuk says. "For fish that are in a negative, inactive mood, it triggers a feeding response."

> At Cayuga he used a No. 7 size Jigging Rap in the glow color – white with a chartreuse head. He threw it on a 7-foot, medium-action spinning rod spooled up with 8-pound-test braided line attached to an 8-foot, 8-pound-test fluorocarbon leader.

RE: Shot Of The Day with caught_and_released_canada…

Have you noticed that some of the fishergals have to take “selfies” of their catch? I mean, couldn’t they find a fisherguy to come along to fish with them and take the pics for them? Not that they “need a man” to do anything for them, but come on! Let’s start a campaign… take a hot woman fishing.

On a side note, I take my hot girlfriend fishing, and she roots for the bass. I caught a 1.5 lb smallie this past weekend on a spinnerbait and she was cheering for the bass to get away. Didn’t work though… 🙂
