Does Your Jig Bounce Right?

(Photo: Bassmaster.com)

In the course of the inzane amount of surfin’ we do here at BassParade/BassBlaster, we ran across this Q&A with the one and only Denny Brauer:

Q: What makes the [Strike King] Pro-Model Strike King jig different from anybody else’s bait?

A: There are a lot of things different about the bounce, where the rattle is placed.

Wazzat now? Made me temporarily correct my posture when I read it.

Two possibilities for that answer:

1. Typo.

2. The way a jig bounces is important to Denny.

Now, after I plan to call and ask him to clarify, but in the meantime it got me thinking: Should a jig bounce when it hits the bottom? Or maybe more precisely: Is bounce a property we should all be valuing in jig?

Even if that was a typo, the possibility intrigues the heck outta me. Thoughts?

The Man said his jig bounces uniquely in a way like no one else’s…Unless Mrs. “Greatest Flipper and Pitcher of All Time” says otherwise I think we should trust him on this. 😉 Maybe he was specifically referring to the bounce of the bead thereby producing a unique rattle sound? It definitely does have a different pitch/tone to it.

He is one of the all time great jig fishermen but bounce? In a dense liquid like water? I’m not buying it.

Maybe “bounce” here really means deflection(?) Like maybe the way it bounces off of limbs or roots etc. on the way down, before it hits bottom? Just a thought.

my guess is that he’s referring to the feeling you get when you drop a heavy jig down. I used to fish with a guy that would keep going heavier with his jigs depending on the bottom content until he could “feel a bump”

I wonder sometimes if the pros just mess with us a little.

No doubts there! Especially Brauer, he is a prankster for sure. I read another interview about a photographer who had worked with him in the past to get a cool shot. The idea was for Brauer to be in his boat on the water and to pitch a jig at the photographer. Not an unusual shot I suppose but this time the photographer was wading chest deep in the water inside some bushes along the bank. So Brauer can hit anywhere he’s aiming, right? Where do you think the jig landed on the very first pitch? Right on top of the photographer’s noggin! Brauer sheepishly tried to play it off with an “Ooops!”.
