Do You Ever Go Pink? Or Pinky-Dink?

Don’t mean “K-Pink,” but spinnerbait.

Remember the old Color-C-Lector? (Wait – I think they still sell it!) Anyhow, believe it used to/still does recommend the color pink for dirty water. Real dirty.

Never bought it. Not that pink wouldn’t work, but that it’d work better than another color the basses could see better (imo) in a mud cloud, like chartreuse, white or even black.

But I do remember Jimmy Houston on one show in ancient times using a pink spinnerbait in dirty water and saying that was one of his favorite colors…for muddy water, that is.

Anyhow, this wasn’t on my mind until recently, when once again going over FishingGold data and I come across this color from a ’95 derby on Dardanelle: One o’ the successful anglers used a Scotty’s Skitterbug spinnerbait (never heard of it) in “pinky-dink.”

Never heard of that color either – sounds like a tiny bass you wear on your pinky finger – but apparently it’s pink/chartreuse/orange.

So how ’bout it you mud-slingers? Anyone go pink or even pinky-dink on a semi-regular basis?

I have a jerkbait that has a lot of pink on it that I am pretty fond of, but nothing in a spinnerbait. Sometimes it’s hard to beat a pink floating worm as well.

The problem I always had with the Color-C-Lector was that it claimed to show what color fish can see best in certain conditions. I don’t think fish normally have much problem seeing our baits, they don’t even have to see them sometimes to eat them. If the color-c-lector doesn’t tell me which color fish want to eat I’ve got no use for it.

Bubble gum used to be the go to color for plastics on richland chambers (south of dallas) when the reservoir was new back the late 80’s. Pink works well in gin clear water as well, particularly for smallies.

On Table Rock where the water is gin clear (not muddy, but we do have some stained water) a few of us that are secure in our manhood use a pink & white Rapala X-Rap around the spawn. Nick-named the Mary Kay Mother. Big brown fish want to kill it.

My Color-C-Lector sits in honor next to my PH Meter, on the bottom of a dusty shelf.

Hot pink was the only color to catch smallies on South Watuppa Pond in Fall River, MA. Fall River was also the home if Lizzie Borden, the ax murderess. Still have the spinnerbaits. Hot pink blades, hot pink vinyl skirt. That was back when spinnerbaits had vinyl skirts. No lie.

Seems to be a theme here. I have been told by a respected Lake Erie tournament friend that a pink tube is a killer on Erie. So, I dug out my white tubes, bought some pink dye…and did not do well…maybe it was just me! I have a friend that does extremely life-like custom paint jobs on crankbaits and sells them on the web. He tells me that there is a color he paints that no one will buy because it has too much pink in it. Yet, he says it’s one of his most productive colors.

I haven’t thrown any pink spinnerbaits but early spring and late fall I get VERY productive results while throwing a pink jerkbait on the CT river for smallies.

Pink has been in my tackle for many years, for example, look close at a Goldfish moving it around at angles, you’ll see hints of pink in the scales of Goldfish and even Shad has same visual affects.

I had a topwater lure made for me in 2011 that caught me many good Stripers, I wanted it to favor a Gold Fish. Tommy Ellis @ghost1066 painted it just the way I wanted it and it did well for me. My biggest landlocked striper for 2011 was 37lbs, and it was on my Lure I had made. I’m giving credit to the color pink that’s in the scales of the lure. *Pink Works*
