Today’s Top 3
1. Do you ‘deflect’?

Champlain Northern EverStart winner Tom LaVictoire Jr. talkin’ to Bassin’Fan:

> “I didn’t get there until about noon because I didn’t want people to know that was my primary spot. I went to two or three other [fish] groups first, and that made it look like it was just like any other stop when actually it was the best spot in the lake.”

> “I call that ‘deflecting.’ I didn’t want to give the ‘juice spot’ away. I knew I’d have a lot of locals following me, and I have to thank them for being so cordial and not fishing my stuff when I left.”

So if you do this, are you…deflective?

And did he really say ‘juice spot’??

2. Trait Crist ain’t no country star…

…like I thought she was when I first saw her name. Bassmaster.com just profiled her – she’s tough!

> “Just because I’m a female doesn’t mean I want special treatment. I want to qualify for the Classic (and Elites) through the same avenue that the guys have to qualify for it. I want the fishing community to have a reason to respect me, not just because I’m a female but because I can really fish.”

> “I want to do it the right way, on my own…not relying on locals to feed me information or using my connections with the Elite guys for help.”

And…if she starts a-winnin’ in those runnin’ shorts, I bet we’ll see at least a couple o’ guys with ’em on…Byron…hahaha!

3. Interestink bass study tidbits.

> Bass from heavily vegetated lakes fed on more different species of fish than those from unvegetated lakes.

> Bass in unvegetated lakes fed more heavily on shad than those from vegetated lakes.

On some level this is “no duh” because veggies = animal variety, even on land. BUT it might affect bait selection – like just about anything’ll work in grass, but not in “unvegetated” lakes?

Tip of the Day

Spy-baiting: ‘New’, ultra-specific Japanese technique.

This “spy-baiting” reminds me a LOT of what Hank Cherry did at the Norman Open, I believe it was, last year:

> …look at the DUO SpinBait 80 and think it’s a topwater double prop bait, only smaller. It weighs 3/8 ounce and it sinks, quickly. On the fall, it shimmies and rolls and falls in a horizontal position, not nose down.

> Once you get it to the depth you believe the bass are holding, you reel it ultra slow, fast enough that it will roll and shimmy as the blades turn.

> Because the action is subtle…it won’t call bass from great distances to the lure. You’re going to need to fish it where the bass are and in water clear enough for them to see it.

> The biggest key is choosing a small-diameter fluorocarbon like 4- to 5-pound test that will keep the bait in the strike zone longer while still keeping it off the bottom. …6-pound test is really pushing the limits….

> It’s not going to  call fish from a distance…but if a bass is in its zone, it seems they have a hard time resisting it’s natural pulse and flow.

> My other boaters last week threw topwaters, jerkbaits, soft jerkbaits, swimbaits, dropshots and more, and the SpinBait80 was catching them 10 to 1.

So: Ultra-clear water, fish need to see it up close, won’t call them over distances, very light line and sounds like it works?

Quote of the Day

I’m sure not out chasing women.

90-year-old Jake Teague talkin‘ ’bout the fact that he fishes, sleeps and don’t have the time or desire to do anything else. Also said:

> “These boys today tow a $50,000 boat behind a $50,000 pickup. I don’t see how they make it.”

Case you wanna argue with Mr. Jake, consider this:

> He fought in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII and then in the Korean War.

> He was one of 200 reconnaissance scouts who he says “went to, on and behind” enemy lines. “I remember seven or eight trips behind German lines,” he said. “I got frostbite a couple of times, but it was nothing compared to the wounded and the dead I’ve seen.”

> Military duty earned Teague two bronze stars, three battle medals and a battlefield commission from staff sergeant to second lieutenant.

You got my salute Mr. Jake, and thank you much.
