BassBlaster

Ditch melons of the week, My Classic shots, First topwater of the year

Heard from a couple folks who wanted their daughters added to the BB list. Pretty cool, and welcome!

If you’re getting the BassBlaster for the first time it’s cuz a bud signed you up!

Today’s Top 4

Stupidly bloated buttah melons o’ the week.

Robert Hunter hauled this 11.7-lb melon outta Ardmore City Lake, OK on a SPRO Little John crank (not sure which one):

Check this largie kinda shaped like a…squatty banjo? A 10.82 ketched by Trey Daggett on Toledo Bend, Texas-rigged Zoom Z Hog outta a brushpile:

Eric Bennett sacked this 10.61 in an ABA derby also on T-Bend. Fishing a point in 8′ with a Texas-rigged Zoom Lizard, 17-lb Seaguar fluorocarbon, Lew’s Speed Spool Tournament Pro Reel and 7′ MH Lew’s Custom Speed Stick rod:

Plus a couple stupid derby catches:

Frank Johnston crushed ’em in a Red Bluff Bass Anglers derby on “Crullers Car,” CA. His winning limit had a 9.94, 9.53 (those two pictured) and 8.51 — total weight = 33.13 lbs. Sounds like he DID NOT use wimp-stick gear: a spinnerbait. 2nd had 8 lbs.

Donny Schlottmann caught these two ditch melons also in Cali, on the Delta, with a purple Senko. First he caught a PB 8.10, then an hour later caught a 10.31. Rumor has it Donny is over 6′ 6″ which is why the fish don’t looks huge:

Some of my fave shots from the Classic.

Ones I took and quick stories on ’em….

When you’re one o’ the most popular guys in bassin’ and B.A.S.S. holds you out of the weigh-in for a bit, you make the best of your time and respool…in the rain. He’s smilin’ cuz I was jackin’ with him about it…a little:

Ike pulls in and the kids swarm all over him like bees on grape soda. Not sure what his kid appeal is — maybe the temper tantrums?? HAHAHA Ike!

Skeet he goes back and pops open the tailgate of his Shaq-sized truck, and what’s the first thing there: a stepladder cuz else you can’t get in it! lol

That many rods and that many baits in the “didn’t work” pile — safe to say Howell wasn’t dialed in in this one:

Kriet wanted to bet me that he’d make the Classic. Reminded him we’re buds so I was rooting for him anyhow, but he still wanted to bet so…. If he doesn’t make it, he’s takin’ me saltwater fishin’. If he does make it, I’m buying him the high-dolla swimbait of his choice:

Seth Feider having his second breakfast of the day:

Feider and I were on Ike Live from the Classic, jacking around about stuff with no regard to the amount of caffeine and lack of sleep affecting at least Gluszek and me. Warning: Don’t watch if you don’t have a sense of humor…sheesh:

Brent Chapman intro’d me to this new Sportsman Protein Shake. Let me tell you: Legit tastes great. Think I downed like 10 of ’em. NO nasty aftertaste. Gitcha some.

Blaster reader Cam had to be the only guy wearing Iron Maiden Eddie kicks — killer! Or should I say “Killers” (that’s for all you Maiden fans):

Sunday morning a gang of us went to Crosspoint Church outside Houston, in Pearland. Awesome time. One of us couldn’t sing a lick but not namin’ names (hahaha just kiddin’ homies!):

Final one: Looks like Dave Lefebre gave up his sketchy van for a normal ride this season. Solid choice:

No way this thing is going to be won shallow. No way.

– A Zona text to me after I hit him with some stats during the Classic that showed most guys were fishing shallow, and most guys who were catching ’em were fishing shallow. So I was like:

Was ready to give him the smackdown on day 3 but J-Lee proved him right mang!

Weirdest thing about the Classic…

…for me was the 16″ minimum length limit. Bear in mind a 15.75″ Texas bass is a 2-3 lb fish.

On the one hand you can say that these guys are the best that year and the Classic should be a challenge. Okay…BUT would you be cool with throwing 2.5-lbers back? That’s happened a lot. One guy told me he release one that would’ve gone 3 lbs.

No idea how Ehrler weighed 11-10 for 5 fish. They must have been dealthy skinny.

Been told there’s no worse feeling than trotting a goose-egg across the Classic stage. I believe it. And how ’bout the psychological effect of getting enough bites to keep you in it but having to throw 12.5 lbs back??

Did it matter for the eventual winner? Impossible to say without a bunch of analysis no one did. Even though I don’t get a vote, I’m hopin’ no more 16″ limits, 15″ limits, slots or whatever else in a Classic.

Either way, I hope the guys didn’t use the bottom ruler:

5. Did Steve “Ain’t” Wright predict the Classic outcome?

Bassin’masters.com coverage is like drinking from a firehose so you may have missed it, but it’s a good’n!

6. HS Classic won by IL’s Benton High School…again.

2nd time in a row for that school:

> Cody Miles and Jordan Bowlin caught 5 bass weighing 10-05 to win the tournament on Lake Houston. They won by a margin of 1-05 over Justin Watts and Alexander Heintze of the Livingston Parish Bassmasters, LA.

> …flooded lily pads…around 2’…. Miles, a sophomore, and Bowlin, a junior, caught all of their fish on two baits…a 1/2-oz BOOYAH Blade Spinnerbait with silver and gold tandem willowleaf blades…a white SPRO Dean Rojas Bronzeye Poppin’ Frog.
> “We just fished the spinnerbait through the pads with a slow retrieve. For the frog we did the same thing, just working it slowly through the pads.”

7. AL: Ray Scott sells bassin’ property.

> “It’s tough to leave, but I won’t be far away,” Scott said…. “I’ll be across the hill on a secluded side of the property in a small cottage on an old 18-acre lake. It’s perfect for me and my wife and our two dogs.”

Haven’t seen the cabin but I know Ray goes big so I’m thinking:

8. TX: See you at Rayburn this weekend…

…at the Brian Robison charity derby tourney and auction. Looks like I’m fishing with Mr. Indiana hisself, Koby Kreiger — stoked!

9. FL: Winter Haven Chain charity derby April 15.

10. AL: Shelby County charity derby May 6.

11. TX biologist gets B.A.S.S. Ken Cook award.

Very cool, didn’t know about this award. Ken was a fish biologist before he became a tourney fisherman.

12. TX: New C&R-only zone on Devils River.

13. LA: Dude caught with 42 largies.

32 over the daily limit, which seems like a pretty generous limit:

> …civil restitution totaling $448 for the replacement value of the 32 fish….

Hope it’s some sort of formula based on the weight of each fish?

14. CAN: NS spending $800K to keep smallies out of trout lake.

Or you could stock spotted bass there and have some bigs?? lol

15. IL: LMB producer suing Purina over feed change.

Merp bass say:

16. ID: Guy turning carp into fertilizer.

Makes sense to me.

Line of the Day

These Poly Fishing Lures are super strong, sharp, and anti-rust hook, firmly grasp the fish’s flesh. The fishing lures is recommended as soft baits set for best fishing journey.

– Lol. From a press release announcing a new “American” fishing tackle company. Suuuuuuuuuure it is.

New Classic stuff

Seemed like fewer new things launched at this year’s Classic, but maybe not looking at the new stuff on Tackle Warehouse already (TW also has a Classic sale that ends TOMORROW!).

A few I ran across:

Jamey Caldwell with the new 2.75″ Rage Swimmer coming out around ICAST:

Shot of the new Lew’s Mach II reel. Don’t think it’s available yet but highlights are: super low pro, Winn Grips stuff, casts everything well including light baits/lines, think a 7.5:1 retrieve:

Check this new stuff designed by Kota Kiriyama — the new Jackall Chan Wake (7/8-oz “subsurface wake bait,” 6 colors, reel it and it walks), pictured with the new Firecracker Buzzbait (3/8- and 1/2-oz, blade whacks prop and vibrates skirt wire)…

…and the new Owner Bucktail Shad, which he used to get a top 10 at the Kentucky lake Elite. Said keys are that it falls on a diagonal and not too fast, has to feel bottom well, the eye isn’t be on the front of the head because that gives the fish too much leverage, more bucktail with subtle blue feathers, and a couple sizes unlike many hair jigs:

Classic contest wind-up!

Hope you got your Classic shots lined up and tagged right to have a shot at winning that pile o’ BOOYAH and YUM baits! If y’all haven’t gotten to it yet, check the deets here again and git ‘er done asap because I’m awardin’ a winner next week!

Tip of the Day

Wake baits first topwater of the year?

What’s the first topwater you pull out? Elitist Jacob Wheeler likes wake baits — specifically the Rapala BX Waking Minnow — when the water’s cold:

Quote of the Day

All he wants is to show me his stupid fishing poles.

Wife of Nation Classic competitor Darrell Ocamica talkin’ ’bout their first dates. Hahaha that’s how bass-heads roll!

This is cool:

> In 2001, she brought him to tears…when she bought him tickets to the Classic. She keeps a photograph of him covering his face, overwhelmed with emotion. He wound up not going. He pledged he would only go the day that he made the cut as a competitor.

Aaaaaaaaaand:
