Today’s Top 4

1. While other guys went out and partied in Vegas [at ICAST], I went to bed early and got up early and hit the gym to get ready for the day.

– Great quote from Ish Monroe. Can’t tell if it’s more revealing about him or his fellow Elites. Quote reminds me of this:

Also caught my eye from the interview:

> From Ranger and Yamaha giving me a second boat and motor to Daiwa providing another 40 rods and reels, I had no reason not to compete this year on both tours because of their efforts.

If Ish has 40 per boat, how many does Ike have??

2. Should R.D. Hull be in the HOF?

R.D.’s the guy who invented the “closed-faced spinning reel,” aka the push-button reel, 60 years ago, and the Bass Fishin’ Hall of Famous Peeps is a-wonderin’ if he should be in. I say…why not – even though push-button reels and bassin’ go together like peanut butter and ham.

Here’s a recent vid about the new Zebco 33. The Dream Theater-ish music cracks me up – guess it’s tough to make a bait-dunker seem cool.

3. JVD’s been southernized!

In this vid talkin’ ’bout the new Loomis NRX Umbrella Rig rod, Jon says it southern: UMbrella. Like INsurance, ‘stead of InSURance, the Yankeeville way to say it.

What does this mean? Not one clue….

4. In case you didn’t guess, a Havoc Bottom Hopper Green Pumpkin is a plastic worm.

Noob alert, noob alert! Uh, no it ain’t there, Jack! That last part be the color.

News

1. RIP Charlie Reed.

> …the winner of the 1986 Bassmaster Classic, died last Friday in Hochatown, Okla., after a bout with lung cancer. He was 78.

> At the time of his Classic victory at Chickamauga and Nickajack lakes, Reed was 51 [and was a Classic rookie!!], which made him the event’s oldest winner until Woo Daves won the Classic at 54 in 2000. The final day of the 1986 Classic was the first time the event was televised live to a national audience on TNN.

> Reed fished four other Classics (1987, 1989, 1991, 1994) and more than 125 Bassmaster events, but the ’86 Classic win was his lone B.A.S.S. victory. He totaled six top 10s in his Bassmaster career before stepping away from pro fishing in 1997.

> Reed is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Vojai Reed, who was an accomplished angler herself. She won the 1984 Women’s World Championship of Bass Angling, and in 1991 became the first female to fish the B.A.S.S. Tournament Trail….

Tough losin’ any bassin’ brother, ‘specially one from the very rare bro-hood of Classic winners.

2. Lee bros might have college duel again.

3. Matt Reed new PAA prez.

4. ND: New license sales record.

How many were sold?

5. Here’s the 2014 Strike King catalog (pdf).

You know you wanna peek!

Tip of the Day

How Denny catches our fish.

> “The biggest thing is to really try to pick out the darkest areas [under docks]. Once the sun gets up, that’s where those fish are going to get.”

> Brauer admits that it can be tough to get a bait, even a flipping bait, into such spots. But he also says that it is more than worth the trouble necessary to do so.

> “A lot of guys just don’t practice their pitching enough to be able to get it into that target zone. If they’ll practice their pitching and then really concentrate on where that fish should be – the darkest, baddest, hardest to get to area – then they’ll start catching a lot more fish.”

Quote of the Day

I never looked at my GPS as far as the (state boundary) line. I was paying attention to the contour lines on the Navionics chip.

Brandon Palaniuk about his DQ on the upper Miss. Aha! So it was Navionics’ fault! Dang detailed chips….
