Today's Top 4

Know y'all like the humor like I do, but a couple tough ones today. Will try to bring the funny but those plus a bud's recent loss hitting me kinda hard. Take care, give some extra love to your families today.

1. Deadly TX boat crash.

Lake Conroe. One woman died, one missing, kids hurt. Awful. Below from here:

> …a 29 year-old female was thrown from their pleasure boat after it was struck by a Skeeter bass boat. That female is still missing and the dive team just called off the search for the night at 330am.

> …a bass boat involved in a fishing tournament had just left the East Beach area of Lake Conroe. As they rounded the corner of the point the bass boat slammed into a large pleasure boat. Both the driver and passenger of the bass boat were ejected but had life vests. The impact almost cut the pleasure boat in two.

> …Josh Ward, a country music singer/songwriter from Montgomery…was a passenger on the bass boat…he has no internal injuries, has a fractured elbow and will need to see an orthopedic. He has been released from the hospital and is home…the driver of the boat, Ward’s friend Andrew is banged up but ok.

> Officials do not believe alcohol played a factor in the crash.

2. FLW co-angler DQd, loses AOY.

Check the vid first:

> “This is an unfortunate situation,” said TD Bill Taylor. “Video from the day shows a single incident where [Jason] Johnson stepped onto the front deck to net a fish for Cody Meyer. Johnson then makes a cast from the front deck and works his lure while waiting with the net. It was clearly an innocent mistake, but it is a violation nonetheless.”

> As a result of the infraction, Johnson’s catch for the day [was] disqualified, giving [Braxton] Setzer the Co-angler of the Year title.

> “Obviously I hate that this happened,” Johnson said. “It was just a reaction to keep fishing. I know fishing from the front deck is not permitted by co-anglers. I’d been casting to the front of the boat for most of the day due to the wind conditions, and I was just trying to keep the school fired up. I just never once thought about it during the heat of the moment. I made the cast, dropped to get the net and was not thinking when I made the cast from the front."

Harsh, but not as harsh as overfeeding a bobcat:

Tip of the Day

Finding the spot within the spot.

Zak Elrite, Rayovac angler:

> The cooler temperatures of early mornings will bring bass out of deep water to search for food shallow. This is my favorite time of year to throw a shallow water squarebill crankbait in the 1-6' depth zone.

> With these shallower baits, I like working main lake pockets and gradual sloping banks with brush or vegetation.

> As the sun gets higher, I’m always sure to fish the shaded side of points or steeper breaks on the bank. When the sun finally finds itself at its highest point you’ll want to step out even deeper and find “the spot within the spot” which may be further out from the areas you’ve already found fish.

> This means that once you find a steep break or long, shallow point you’ll have to reach deeper and hit any small rock pile or ditch that you find with an ultra-deep crankbait….

> The best way to do this is to try to place the boat in different positions, allowing you to fish across the point, along it or parallel to the steepest banks you can find.

> …vary your retrieve and be sure to bump each piece of structure on the bottom.
