D Bomb d O killah, Baker CAN count, Ike’s G.U.S.P.

Welcome to Jay Kumar's BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o' bassin'!

Today's Top 3

1. Is D Bomb d new Big O killah?

IL's Chad Morgenthaler beat the best odds you could ever have of making the Bassin'master Classic by winnin' the Wild Card on the Big O this weekend. (Odds kinda looked like the Redskins' stadium after halftime this weekend…ouch.)

Chad's main bait was the Johnny Crews-designed Missile Baits D Bomb – same bait in the same color (bruiser flash, pictured) Ish Monroe won an Elite with last year.

Nother words, every couple years a bait racks up multi wins on the Big O (Chatterbait, Skinny Dipper, etc) – and now da D Bomb has two Classic berths in the last 2 years. Stout.

Why is that bait so good for the O? Called Ish, what he said is in today's fishin' tip below. Also: Chad used the love bug color when it was cloudy.

2. Baker CAN count.

By now y'all should know that Bassmaster.com's own Shaye Baker almost won the Wild Card (awesome!). But he had six in the well after day 3….

Case you think he can't count, we got a print of his right hand off his windshield:

Not sure if that indicates anything, but we spotted this on his truck dash:

3. Ike's got G.U.S.P.

Not GUTS, but GUSP:

> It stands for General Universal Seasonal Patterns. That means a bass is a bass is a bass no matter where you live, and will go through the same things throughout their life cycle. They will do the same thing in the winter, spring, summer and fall no matter where you live or fish for bass!

Gotta say…this is why BassGold works so well – and why each water body in BassGold is organized by WATER TYPE, because all upland reservoirs fish very similarly no matter where they are, same with lowland reservoirs, natural lakes, etc.

News

1. Chip Porche returning to Elites…maybe.

> Money will again be an issue in 2014. He said it appears as if his primary sponsor, specialized motorcycle manufacturer U.S. Highland, won't be back. He's currently putting in a great deal of time in search of a replacement.

> He got a loan from a good friend to make his initial $8,000 entry-fee deposit last week. Right now, he doesn't know where the funding for the second deposit (due in February, just a few weeks before the season starts) will come from.

2. Skeet helps HS snowboard team.

3. Give Z a moose already!

Outdoor Channel's Golden Moose award. Vote for Zona, bass-heads!

4. Crocs fish for birds with sticks.

You start seein' this wif Okeechobee gators, it'll be time to make the dinos extinct again.

From a BassBlaster reader: I like the fact that MegaStrike is a sponsor. I won a tube on the Texas Fishing Forum one time and now I swear by it! It's great stuff.

Tip of the Day

Ish Monroe: Why D Bomb is D Bomb.

> When that bait's sitting still, it's not sitting still. It's actually still moving.

> When you're fishing Okeechobee, you have to keep the bait sitting there. If the bait's not moving at all, the fish won't eat it. It's just dead. But if it's sitting there and moving, it attracts the big ones.

> The D Bomb has so much water movement to it. There's more bulk to it than many other creature baits on the market – it's a little larger, wider, there's more going on. There's a lot of displacement with the ribs, arms, flappers and tail, so when that bait's sitting on the bottom, it's still moving. And it's not coming at you – you're not moving the rod to move the bait. It's moving on its own.

> It sits on the bottom in the same place, but the bait itself still has some movement to it. That's key for fishing Okeechobee especially. Guys talk about how they have to fish slow there. The slower you fish, the better off you are

> The D Bomb imitates any kind of bait out there. It imitates a crawdad, bluegill, shad – just about anything a bass will eat.

Quote of the Day

It’s a subtle difference in nomenclature regarding amphibian species, but a big difference in performance.

– Believe it or not, from a piece about fishin' Horny Toad-type baits vs. froggies. Who talks like this?? Oh:
