Today’s Top 3
Got a little theme goin’ today, “sea” if you can find it.

1. Bass Champs ups the ante big-time.

Arguably the best regional tourney trail in the country just shot this out:

> Our new vehicle sponsor is going to cover your entry fees for two years simply for purchasing a new vehicle. Yes, you read that correctly. You’ll get VIP pricing on the vehicle and be able to fish the #1 Tournament Trail in Texas FOR FREE FOR 2 YEARS….

Also said this:

> Important: Bass Champs will no longer offer an incentive bonus for Ram trucks.

2. After one 3-hour trip to the lake I am 100% impressed with this technology.

Guy talkin’ ’bout his first experience with the HydroWave, KVD edition of course. Also said:

> I put down the trolling motor and turned on the HydroWave. Seriously, within 30-45 seconds there was shad surfacing near the bow of the boat. This was almost humorous because I was just telling my friend I was pretty skeptical about the HydroWave and was prepared to take it back to Bass Pro if I thought it was a marketing scam.

> As we moved from location to location the the minute the HydroWave was turned on we’d get some kind of baitfish activity near the boat. Sometimes it was 20 yards to the side of the boat, sometimes it was right by the trolling motor, but there was always some kind of baitfish activity.

> I can’t guarantee it makes you catch more fish but it most definitely brings baitfish activity near the boat.

I don’t own one of these (yet), but every Elite pro does and they ain’t puttin’ anything on their boats that don’t help. Some folks put that and BassGold in the same category: Skeptical ’til you see it work.

Btw here’s an actual underwater shot of what happens when the HydroWave is on:

3. Fly fishermen are 100 years old!

Stuck like in a time warp, Dr. Who. Here are 2 ‘tips’ for fly-ketchin’ bass, from Field & Stream:

> Find the structures like old creek channels, drop offs, old buildings, roads, etc. and you will eventually find the fish.

> Don’t be afraid to toss soft plastics on the fly rod: At night, when it’s tough to see vegetation, nothing works better than a light weedless rigged “lizard” or a 4-inch worm. Why not try what works when the going gets tough? You’re still doing it on a fly rod.

All of which means fly fishermen are about 100 years behind bass fishermen…a little less than that if they fish with a Loomis (lol).

News

1. AL: Angler killed by low power line.

Sounds like guys were running at 70 mph, and UNMARKED power lines were down across the TN River for some kind of work. TVA owned up to the mistake, which is good and unusual, but this did not have to happen, dang it.

> Anthony Szozda, known to his fishing friends as “Ski Daddy,” and Thacker were participating in a bass tournament held every Tuesday night out of Ingalls Harbor.

> Alabama Marine Police officer Larry Adams said Thacker was headed to a fishing hole at about 70 mph when the accident occurred.

> Szozda was sitting on a bench seat next to Thacker, who was the [driver]. The line hit the metal pole to the front pedestal seat before hitting the victim. Thacker dodged the line, losing only his hat, and was uninjured.

> The [power] line bent two pedestal seats and a river anchor, causing an estimated $2,300 damage to the boat. The boat still is usable, he said.

Sounds a lot like what happened to John Sappington practicing for the Atchafalaya FLW in 2004. John didn’t lose his life that day, but came close.

RIP bassin’ brother. Get it together TVA.

2. WI going to modern vs. legacy records.

Old, unverified records will still be kept around.

3. IN: Catch a tagged bass, win a BPS gift card.

4. AL: AL Bass Trail series might start in Mobile.

> “It would be a huge stepping stone for us to get on the national bass fishing tournament circuit.”

But, uh, AL ain’t national…in most counties, anyhow…. Ain’t that right sheriff? Hey – he’s right behind you!

5. MN ghost musky.

Dude caught this ghost muskie, 46″, on July 15, somewhere in metro Minneapolis. Said “it was whiter than anything I’d ever seen” – even on a Lake Michigan beach?? Hahahahaha!

6. Lefty Kreh is awesome!

You might know that name as an awesome fly angler and fly fishing pioneer. But how ’bout:

> Earned enough money to buy shoes and clothes by catfishin’

> WWII vet, Battle of the Bulge, liberated a concentration camp

> Only man to survive exposure to a certain strain of anthrax

> Trick shooter, shot aspirins out of the air, sponsored by Remington

Wow! Where are the bada$$ outdoor dudes like that anymore??

Tip of the Day

Terry Scroggins: Tidal vs. reservoir current.

> “The fish on Tennessee River lakes are current related this time of the year. They sit on ledges and wait for the current to move the food to them.”

> He said a tidal river acts the same, only on a schedule.  “While you can beat on them all day when they’re generating power on a Tennessee River lake, you have a limited time in each location because of tides. I will follow those tides for 6 hours on a tournament back home [St. Johns River] just hitting offshore sand bars when the tide is changing on them.”

> He chooses the 1/2-ounce Bomber Fat Free Shad Jr. (the BD6) if he is in water to 10 feet deep, and chooses the 3/4-ounce Fat Free Shad (BD7) if he is in water deeper than that.

Quote of the Day

A lot of guys get bored trolling, but if that’s the case, you’re really not staying engaged in the whole process.

– You mean staying engaged by like…drinking beer?? HA! (Of course not advocating that, just joshin’.) Quote is from a wally fisherman about a new leadcore line – which, come ta think o’ it, maybe could be used in…strollin’?
