Today's Top 5

1. Coble wins…again.

NC's Jeff Coble has won a bunch o' derbies over the years, the latest being his win this weekend of the Shimano-sponsored Kingston Canadian Open on Lake Ontario. Won $20,000 with a tourney-record 3-day 15-fish weight of 72.05 lbs = a 4.8-lb average = stout!

He was dropshotting a tube – yep, dropshotting a tube, what it says – in 25 feet.

2. What other girl do you know who records all of the bass fishing shows and reads all of the bass fishing articles out there in the magazines and on the Internet?

– Self-described "fishing nerd" 17-year-old Laura Ann Foshee, whose family owns Big Bite Bait Co.

Also said:

> "I'd have to say that I like to flip or to worm fish more than I like to fish a crankbait. Why? Because there's more action on the hook set and you can catch some really good fish."

> "KVD, I'm coming for you!"

3. First gal to win NY Nation event.

In NY that is, in 40+ years! Katherine Owczarzak of South Buffalo:

> Owczarzak’s total of 17.75 pounds set two records for New York Bass Chapter statewide competitions — largest five-fish limit for all female anglers, and first female to win the Non-Boater Division in the history of BASS chapter competitions. She received a plaque and $1,500.

Sweet!

4. I was so happy when I caught that fish – and I won the tournament!

– My 10-year-old daughter, who caught this 4-lber yesterday from a pond where no one has ever seen a fish that big. She won $10 and has a new personal best.

She also said: "I could be the world's best girl bass-fisher" in the future. Elite anglers take note: She caught it on half a Senko on a #4 hook under a bobber. Money!

5. Gator clip jig.

Welllllllll:

> Using electrical solder, Dickey attaches a 1/0 weighted wide-gap worm hook to a small alligator clip. He paints the clip—sometimes adding stick-on eyes—and finishes the lure with a rubber skirt. The creation resembles a jig, but its brilliance rests in the clip: Dickey pins a live shiner, worm, crayfish, or soft-plastic lure crossways in the clip’s mouth.

> The whole package mimics a predator eating prey, and according to Dickey it makes big, territorial bass really mad.

Tip of the Day

Kevin VanDam: Offshore tips.

> Long offshore points and river ledges are good bets, but don’t overlook shallow flats. Some of the best offshore places I’ve fished in summer have been extremely shallow, such as where the current blew over a shallow flat between an island and the bank.

> When scouting a lake for sweet spots, I begin on the down-lake end and work up-lake so I can see how the current moves around bends and where it hits directly on structural elements. If there is more current over one area than others, the bass will key on it when the water is moving.

> When the water is running…those feeding flurries can be short-lived, which is why power fishing is best. You can make more casts and catch more fish in a shorter period of time than if you’re dragging finesse plastics around on the bottom.

> I choose a lure that is most efficient at fishing that depth and the type of cover or structure on the spot. I prefer heavier baits this time of year because they can be moved abruptly and fall faster to trigger more reaction strikes.

> If I do catch one on a spot and can’t get another bite on the fast mover, I will try a drop shot, shaky head or jig.
