Today’s Top 3

1. Jason Christie scares fish!

Long time ago/galaxy far away, I started a website called BassFan partly because a guy named Gary Klein told me that he won two consecutive tournaments on two different circuits (BASS and FLW) and I thought it was nuts you couldn’t read about that anywhere. And here, like 14 years or so later, someone’s achieved that same “one and one” feat again: Jason “I scare bass” Christie.

HUGE achievement. Mega props. Jason was a fave to win the Classic not just because he’s an Okie and knows Grand, but because he’s a stone cold killa on upland reservoirs – which he’s just proved on Beaver and Bull Shoals.

Bait-wise that’s wins with a YUMbrella Flash Mob Jr. and now a Heddon One Knocker Spook…which is an interesting choice I’ll be calling Jason about (lemme know if you have any questions). Here’s the exact color Spook he used:

> From Heddon: The single tungsten rattle contained in a sound-intensifying chamber produces a loud thump that draws fish from long distances. Its positioning within the body of the lure makes walking-the-dog easier than ever. Fourteen color patterns and Mustad Triple Grip hooks take care of the rest.

Btw, here’s the most interesting pic of Jason fishing the Elite. He’s keeping his profile low to not spook (haha, spook!) breaking fish. When’s the last time you thought of spooking breaking fish??

2. The next bait craze?

Apparently baits with these furry/wavy gills have been tearing up the inshore scene. Made by Unfair Lures. Me likee that name, definitely curious about the baits….

> One of the unique features of these new lures is their “bleeding gills.” These lures have blood red, feathery plastic gill inserts that look like the real deal.

> The lures have also been designed to emit the underwater, sonic resonance of the various bait fish they are designed to mimic.

3. Want in on this poker game?

That’s L to R: Mercer, Sanders, Overstreet, Clunn, Z. Original art by Arturo Gonzalez Murga (see it here way bigger and better) inspired by a random pic.

Dave said the only way to make it better would be do have it on velvet. Dang straight. Don’t forget the black lights….

Btw, I’ve got Clunn and Sanders as the guys who take all the $$$ in that game….

1. PA considering allowing 5-hook A-rigs.

Or no limit. Right now the limit is 3 hooks.

2. Second NC 14-lber caught…

…this one, yep on an A-rig. (But…that look like a 14 to you?)

3. ID: Bureau of Reclamation killed Payette River.

Smallmouth, other fisheries will take more than 10 years to recover. Our tax $ at work….

4. ME: Alewives will be back in St. Croix River.

So…fat smallies?

Tip of the Day

Billy Westmoreland, yellow jigs and deep craws.

Tip from a smallie master:

> He was famous for throwing his bright yellow Hoss Fly jig in the late fall, winter and early spring. It was a strange-looking color, but it worked for him and for those of us who were fortunate enough to go fishing with him.

> I asked him about that one day because I’d never seen anything swimming in Dale Hollow that looked like it. He explained that crayfish lived deep during the cold weather seasons. There isn’t much sunlight down there so their shells turn light. When a smallmouth sees them he or she doesn’t necessarily see any color at all. What they probably see is a light spot along the bottom of the lake or in the rocks.

If’n I wuz hungry, it was cold and dark, and I saw a light spot moving along the ground, I’d grab it. Just sayin….

Quote of the Day

I just don’t want to see guys like Larry Nixon as a worm fisherman have to throw an Alabama rig.

Jason Christie on the A-rig. Also said:

> My personal opinion is that I don’t like it. I really think it’s changed fishing. It changes the way I fish. With us [on FLW] able to use this rig, if they are biting it, you better be throwing it or you’re going to get beat.

I’m thinkin’ there’s room for an A-rig-only tourney trail….
