Christie loses Rayovac, prefish from yer couch?, ‘Trap tree

Welcome to Jay Kumar's BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o' bassin'!

Fishin' biz folks, you still got time to get in the Blaster for 2014 or in time for Christmas! Just respond to this email to get in touch. You know you want to!

Today's Top 5

1. Jason Christie Rayovac deal gone.

Sounds like he wanted to "augment it," FLW said no, now he's on the hunt for a new main sponsor.

Jason's one o' the best fishermen walkin' right now, at the top o' the Bassin'Fan World Rankin's. Someone be thinkin' that FLW/Rayovac be stone cold crazy:

2. Prefish from your couch?

Bass Champs gets mo fo real. Check this, new TV format:

> The purpose of the [TV] show is to provide a new look for Bass Champs and focus on pre-tournament scenarios rather than results oriented information.

> “For example, since we are going to be on Lake Amistad on January 11, the show on January 5 will bring in highlights from previous shows on Amistad as well as patterns to try, techniques that worked in the past, etc. It’s almost like being able to pre-fish for Bass Champs from your couch the week before the tournament!”

THAT IS SMART! Are you listening [insert trail name here]?

Or you could use BassGold…just sayin'….

3. Life goes on. I'm just going to have to pick myself up and move forward.

Elite angler Jami Fralick talkin' 'bout not being able to afford the Elite deposits for 2014 because his good friend and employer unexpectedly died, putting money he is owed in limbo.

Dang. Tough one all the way 'round.

4. They weren't bitin' today.

Funny-ish vid of pros spoutin' bassin' cliches. Not hilarious cuz the actin' skillz ain't there. Kevin Hawk's a great fisherman, but don't even beat this guy actin':

Btw, believe you pronounce his first name: "quinoa." Vid by Pro Fishin' Management.

5. Who loves Z?

As seen at a DQ somewhere in the upper midwest. That is Zona lodgin' territory, but it's not Z's wife KZ's tag – cuz it's on a Ford hahaha!

Thanks to BB reader Jake the Snake for sending in…another guy whose mind can't get outta the bassin' gutter apparently! Join the club mang!

Btw, OutdoorChannel.com is hostin' a Zona live deer hunt in TX right now (2 pm EST) right here.

News

1. Shaye can fish??

Bassmaster.com's Shaye "cheez balls are diet food" Baker (if it matters, Shaye ain't a B.A.S.S. employee far as I know) is leadin' the Wild Card after day 1! This may be a sign of the apocalypse….

The 3 other guys in the tournament are Russ Lane, Chad Morgenthaler and Greg Hackney. HAHA! Kiddin', but those guys are 2nd-4th. Hack is 7.5 lbs out, just one fish at the Big O.

2. Clark Wendlandt wants to be Elite.

> Wendlandt hopes to join the ever-growing contingent of two-tour pros in 2015 and thus will fish the Bassmaster Northern Opens next year in an attempt to qualify for the Elite Series.

3. Meet Bruce Lee.

Not that one (sorry can't resist), but the paterfamilias of the Lees of college fishin' fame. Great column on hard work by Matt Lee.

4. MN: HS student says more forage needed…

…for Mille Lacs.

5. Bassin' boats to go public?

Owner of Ranger, Triton Champeen, Stratos….

6. DC considering less ethanol.

Would be great, but….

7. Mr. Crappie SlabStalker comin'!

This month. Be tellin' your friends! Sign up here.

From a BassBlaster reader: I like the fact that MegaStrike is a sponsor. I won a tube on the Texas Fishing Forum one time and now I swear by it! It's great stuff.

Tip of the Day

Mark Menendez: Less crankin' fatigue.

> Big baits, long casts and hard cranking can take it out of you even if you're young and healthy. If you've got a few years in your rear-view mirror, it can be brutal.

> That's why I worked with the folks at Lew's to create a new handle design for cranking rods. We call it the "Palmer," and it will definitely make your crankbait fishing easier, less demanding and more productive.

> We all know what to look for in a good cranking rod blank. Unfortunately, too often we overlook the handle which is important because that's where the angler meets the rod.

> Conventional casting rod handles have a trigger that requires you to divide your fingers and wrap them around the handle and reel. That puts your wrist, elbow and shoulder at angles that can add to your fatigue and may even contribute to tendonitis or other problems.

> The Palmer keeps all of your fingers above the trigger during the retrieve and keeps your wrist at a more comfortable and ergonomically-friendly angle.

> Another thing you can do is to really refine your mechanics. A good long cast with a big deep-diving crankbait doesn't have to involve every muscle in your body. It should be efficient and smooth, involving your wrist, elbow and a slight turn of your upper body. It shouldn't look like you're throwing a discus at the Olympics.

> If you've ever watched my friend David Fritts cast, you know how economical the movement can be.

Quote of the Day

The solution to any problem – work, love, money, whatever – is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be.

– Amen. From John Gierach, a fly-fisherman…but one 9-lb largie'll take care of that right quick.

aww you were supposed to figure out why it makes sense for FLW to let their leaders walk away and convince me so I’m not left to believe it’s the racket it’s been accused of being for so long. **as i sit imagining Forrest Wood as a yakuza**
