Today's Top 5

1. 10XD wins on Wheeler.

The massive, gargantuan and crazy effective Strike King 10XD crankin'bait won Sunday’s Toyota Bonus Bucks Owners Tournament on Wheeler, AL.

> “We saw other anglers fishing deep, but we were fishing deeper”…[on downriver ledges] to 35 feet.

> “Finding fish that were active and feeding on big balls of bait [as big as the sonar screen] was key.”

My two fave parts:

> The winning fish were caught by 18-yr-old Sam George [cool].

> This quote, because I guess part of my brain is..well, 18: "You could just see the bass streaking through the balls.”

Sorry….

2. When you start pushing towards 20 swimbaits and your presentation resembles more of a chandelier than a bass-fishing lure….

Opinion column on FLWOutdoors.com about the A-rig ban. Added:

> …bigger rigs were starting to cause major health problems with anglers’ shoulders, backs and elbows wearing down.

Already? Wow.

3. Hall of Fame guys getting Tanked?

The Bass Fishin' Hall of Fame has a new home comin' in Cullman, AL, and in that home it needs a fishy tank. To wit:

> Under the partnership, ATM [the guys on Tanked] has agreed in principle to design and install a custom freshwater bass-themed aquarium of approximately 36,000 gallons inside the Hall of Fame’s Education Center, the construction and installation of which will be featured on a future episode of "Tanked."

That "partnership" word makes it sound like the HOF isn't payin' in full (good), and would love to see our guys on tanked…maybe?

4. When they finally did win the Stanley Cup, Bryan called me the very next day and was like, ‘Dude, when are we going to start filming?'

First of all, the Stanley Cup refers to the top team award in professional hockey, which really is a sport!

Okay, don't believe me but it's true.

Second, that's Dave "I'm really famous in Canada – really" Mercer (hahaha Dave!) talkin' 'bout Chicago Blackhawks winger Bryan Bickell…

…Winger?

Anyhow, Bryan is on a hawkey team and Mercer told him he could come fish on his Facts of Fishin' show when the Blackhawks won this Stanley Cup thing…which apparently either did happen or Bryan said it did and Mercer believed him. To wit:

That's cool!…in Canada.

5. I ain't goin' swimmin' there!

Speakin' of Canadia, was up there this week for a super Top Secret mission, deets to come later, and caught this-a-here fish:

'Bout 46" and 30 pounds. 30!! That thing came up to the boat, first thought was: Peeps would be nuts to swim in that lake.

Caught it trollin' a giant Rapala jerk-looking bait – very specific pattern – that did a better job than any other of pulling through the grass. But the whole time I was itching to fish the smallies in that place. Next time….

News

1. CA: Guy claims state protecting Delta bass…

…for salmolns. Ain't a Cali rez, but last time I checked, that statement gets this reaction:

BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Yeah right.

2. All-Star votes: Ike, G-man, Mr. Yellow, BP.

If you're surprised by this, please raise your third hand.

3. 2013-14 School of the Year schedule out.

I like the combo of events from all three – yes, three – college programs.

4. NV: First fish award.

Cool idea.

5. UT: huge Pineview muskie.

Caught Aug. 5, 51" – short of the Pineview record 53" caught in 1998.

> The furious battle lasted about 20 minutes. On several occasions, his father was close to netting the muskie, but it would dive down and rip off another 25 yards of line. ”It was a little delicate at times as I only had 12-pound test line on.”

6. WI: How to beat rusty crays? Eat 'em.

Duh!

> In the early 2000s, when UW researchers began the rusty removal experiment, Sparkling Lake was essentially deforested. There were no beds of aquatic plants, no spawning sunfish and tons of invasive crayfish. "We were catching 1,000 a day and eating them all the time."

> By suppressing the rusty crayfish population, researchers enabled plant communities to grow back and, with them, the aquatic invertebrates and fish that called them home.

Tip of the Day

Basic current tips.

Good stuff:

> Mostly, the current created by electric generation will follow the main lake channel. You can find the channel with a map or with your electronics and go from there.

> In my experience the sharpest turns will produce the best. I always start by fishing the outside of the bend. If that doesn’t produce, I never leave without fishing the inside of the bend.

> The current created by creeks and other types of tributaries is…at its best right after a rain. This kind of current isn’t hard to find. All you have to do is look for moving water.

> Often times, though, it’ll last long after you can’t see it. The water underneath will move along the same path even when you can’t see it moving on top.

> Most creeks and other types of inflows make a bowl-shaped depression right where the water enters the lake. As the water leaves that bowl it often creates an eddy on both sides of the flow.

> It’s not always something that you can see. In fact, what you’ll usually see is a collection of nasty looking leaves and twigs.

Quote of the Day

Anybody who sits in the rain when it’s 42 degrees and never gets a bite and wants to keep on fishing, that’s loving it.

Guy talkin' 'bout his 13-yr-old son who will soon be fishing the BASS Nation Youth Tournament at Neely Henry, AL. Hard-CORE! Love it.
