CA winner cranked ledges??, Mark Davis sitcom??, Ike can’t hang??

Welcome to the BassBlaster, your daily-ish roundup of everything you need to know in bassin’!

Today’s Top 5

Clear Lake Ray-o-Start won on…ledges.

CA’s Aaron “I look like [any MLB pitcher name here]” Britt won it this weekend with a 3-day weight of 70 even, almost 3 lbs better than 2nd.

> “…I narrowed my areas down to three mid-lake ledges with deep water nearby. A couple were major community holes, but other anglers would make a pass and give up on them. I knew the bass were moving up to feed on baitfish and crawdads, and if I was there when they came up, I’d catch them.”

> “I fished a Damiki DC-400…and also caught them on a Spro Little John DD and Bill Norman DD 22.” …starting the day with crawfish colors and changing to shad patterns as the sun rose higher.

> “I cast as far as I could, and then reeled as hard as I could until the bait hit bottom. Then I’d sweep the rod so I could feel bottom, reel in the slack and sweep again.”

> “Generally the water temperature this time of year in Clear Lake is about 4 degrees lower than it is now. A lot of the fish are suspending and still out deep in their summer haunts and they haven’t moved shallow.”

Interesting. 2nd-5th all fished shallow.

Elites getting trimmed.

You can read the whole story if you want, but the bottom line is that the guys who are lowest in the points will get dropped and have to requalify, something B.A.S.S. has had in the works for a while and the pros all knew about.

Best quote about it I saw:

> “My only response would be that we knew the criteria and I knew what was going to happen if I didn’t catch ’em,” Charlie Hartley said. “It might be just the kick in the butt I need to go back to the Opens and win Angler of the Year and prove to myself I can still fish. I take full responsibility for where I finished.”

Now THAT is old-school stout! Way to go Charlie.

If anyone’s mad at B.A.S.S. about this, just send them Ole Miss stuff hahaha!

Mark Davis sitcom?

At the Strike King media workshop on Kentucky Lake a couple weeks ago, I saw the pilot for a new TV show called Catch-Em Lane. Had heard about it, thought it would be more like a reality show, but to me it was most like a sitcom…and was LEGIT!

Who knew Mark Davis could act…and I kid you not, he was better than some of the professional actors. Don’t think he believed me when I told him that….

Could see it on something like a family channel. Hope it happens.

Ike can’t hang??

The Iaconellis basically have their own reality show on Facebook / Instagram – can be entertaining sometimes. Here’s one example:

Can’t repeat the best comments here, but they are a hoot!

New boat/plane/tent.

If you already have everything or think your life is too safe:

> The MVP is a “triphibious” airplane, meaning it can land on earth, snow or water depending on gear. Certified as a Light Sport (S-LSA) airplane, it will cost about $189,00 when it finally hits the market in about 5 years.

> With a retractible instrument panel and canopy, the nose of the airplane opens wide to resemble a bass boat. The plane can be outfitted with a pedestal seat in the front for fishing or other boating activities.

News

1. 2015 Opens schedule out.

Bassin’Fan reported:

> Also, B.A.S.S. has decided to move the eight Elite Series event – Lake St. Clair – up a month. Originally scheduled for Sept. 24-27, it is now set for Aug. 27-30, the week immediately following the Forrest Wood Cup, and during the same week FLW has a Northern Rayovac slated for Lake Erie out of Sandusky, Ohio.

2. TX-LA: 11.27 caught at T-Bend.

> Marcel Guidroz was fishing in 15-18′ with a 7″ Strike King Rage Thumper Worm (junebug), Texas-rigged with a 3/16-oz tungsten bullet weight.

> He was working grasslines next to deep water along the creek channels. “I kept working around a nice bend in the creek channel with some grass on the edge, and that’s where she was.”

> Guidroz used a 7′ 3″ Kistler KLX heavy action rod and a Lew’s Tournament Pro reel spooled with 16-lb Sunline fluorocarbon.

3. GA: Record Clarks Hill spot.

Steve Pinkston fished the BFL on Clarks Hill on Sept. 6, weighed this 4-05 spot – which is now a GA record for that lake, which previously had no spotted bass record. Steve says, “I caught the fish on a Carolina-rigged Zoom Trick Worm (green pumpkin).”

4. 128,600 attend ’14 Elite events.

Wow! Who knew Mercer had that many fans?? (hee hee)

5. CAN: Berkley B1 champs.

2014 Champions Nicolas Gendron & Jason Gramada for being the first team in history to win it twice and weighed the biggest bag ever = 47.48 lbs over 2 days. Could not find any info on what they used, etc. = doh!

6. Register to be an Elite Marshal.

Btw this is my favorite Marshall, and yes purple does make it sound better!

CA Scene – from Jody Only

> Team (Lorenzo Rossetti and father John Rossetti) that went back-to-back in the West Coast Bass Cat Owner’s Invitational (this year and last year) went back-to-back in Stockton Bass’s TOC as the champions AND also back-to back as trail AOY.

> Btw Dee Thomas, inventor of flippin’, finished 2nd overall in a Delta TOC.

Tip of the Day

Edwin Evers: Big water tips.

Awesome stuff from Steady Eddie:

> I do a lot of regular maintenance on my boat, but when I’m going to be out in rough weather, I turn it up a notch. One of the things I’ll do every day is check the bolts on my transom. They can get loose when the boat takes a pounding from the waves (or even during long trailering runs). I also carry two big C clamps in case I snap a bolt and need a way to hold everything together until I get back to the ramp.

> I even carry extra straps to hold my trolling motor down against the bracket on the front deck. The basic strap is enough almost all of the time, but on rough water it can pull loose.

> My Optima batteries…operate flawlessly even when they get completely submerged, and their spiral technology makes them the most vibration-resistant batteries on the market.

> I have high capacity bilge pumps on my Nitro…but in case one fails, I carry spares that I can change out in just a few minutes. And test your pumps before you go out on potentially rough water. It’s cheap insurance.

> The drains on a modern bass boat look great. They’re sleek and color-coordinated, and do a fine job most of the time. But if I anticipate that there might be a lot of water in my boat, I unscrew the factory drain and temporarily replace it with one I’ve specially modified…with a hammer…so that it allows water to pass through faster and is less likely to clog….

Quote of the Day

I get more publicity on television, on websites and on social sites from the PAA than from other tours I fish.

Pro Todd Auten talkin’, also the PAA treasurer…from a post about how the 2014 PAA season is canceled this year after getting knocked off the rails by the longest tournament ever…Bays de Noc.

Shot of the Day

Dave “don’t tell anyone I cloned myself” Mercer was on ’em recently on the big border waters….

…and someone stowed away on his boat:

Last Werd

Have seen some support from fishin’ companies for breast cancer this month. Cool, but…would love to see support for a bassin’ charity that provides help for bassers in need. Doesn’t exist yet though….
