Today’s Top 3

1. Palaniuk threw new Arashi crankbait.

BP mighta, shoulda, coulda, woulda won the uMiss Elite last weekend, but didn’t thanks to a MN-caused DQ. But wait – what was he doing to catch 18 lbs a day up there? Fishin’ the Arashi, a new Storm squarebill (Arashi means “Storm” in Japanese).

More below, but that color – black silver shad – is fo sho what he was using, confirmed with him this morning.

> At ICAST Storm will unveil the Arashi in 4 models with 12 colors: the Arashi Square 3 and Arashi Square 5, Arashi Rattling Flat 7, and Arashi Rattling Deep 10. The numbers indicate the bait’s maximum diving depth.

> Until then, Palaniuk is the only Elite Series angler that has them. He was fishing with an Arashi Square 3. He threw it at big smallmouth bass holding in main river eddies in 1-3′ near isolated rocks.

> “As soon as [the Arashi] hit the rocks, it went straight over the rocks and right into their face. So they had no option other than to eat the bait. I would fish this bait extremely fast. It was bumping and grinding through those rocks, and all of a sudden, your rod would load up….”

The bait apparently has a self-tuning line-tie?

_____

If you’re keeping score:

> Rapala is a MN company

> Rapala is a BP sponsor

> BP coulda won an Elite with a new Rapala bait (the perfect marketing storm)…

> …but he was DQd because of an antiquated MN rule

If I’m Rapala, I’m still ticked! Though marketing around the DQ is smart. Love it.

2. Spring coldest in 17 years.

The fishing biz doesn’t live and die by the spring, but it’s close, and this spring…sucked. It was the coldest since ’96, and if your weather was anything like mine in NJ, it was also super wet. If that ain’t enough:

> The cold and wet spring stopped west of the Rockies. Drought continues to parch the West, where it was warm and dry from January through May. California saw only 29 percent of its average precipitation for January through May. Areas of extreme drought increased in southeastern Colorado and New Mexico.

3. Carrot Stix bought by Chinese govt???

> CEC America is a Chinese government-owned company that functions primarily in the electronics industry. It stated in its press release that attire, surveillance and safety equipment may also be displayed under the Carrot Stix brand by the end of the year.

I am TEMPTED to go off about how we send all our money overseas, but I won’t…. But “Chinese” and “orange” makes me think of one my fave dishes:

Orange Chix!

All buzzbaits are not created equal!

Tip of the Day

Ish Monroe: Frogs not around grass.

> Toward the end of the 2011 Bassmaster Elite season, the tour visited two large, river-run impoundments where offshore, river-channel patterns typically prevail during summer: Lake Wheeler in Alabama and the Arkansas River near Little Rock. Monroe used a frog to score two of his best finishes….

> “Most of the field focused on main river patterns at Wheeler, but each morning I had a good frog bite, casting along undercut banks, overhanging trees and other wood and steeper dirt banks in small creeks. There was current and the fish were positioned near cover. As it warmed and the sun got high, I headed out to the river to fish ledges, but those frog fish anchored my catch.”

> On the Arkansas River, Monroe fished a black Ish’s Phat Frog in backwaters…. “Most of my bass came around wood and rock in less than a foot. You had to fish it slowly around any piece of cover. That’s why a weedless frog worked better than a topwater plug.”

Quote of the Day

I’ve never thrown that one, but I just might if I get bored throwing the other two.

Elite pro Casey Ashley talking about a silver-bellied/purple-legged frog he had tied on for day 1 of the uMiss Elite. Shows just how unscientific the pros can be sometimes….
