BP on BP: Weirdest Thing You’ve Caught?

When you hear the term junk-fishing you probably think about fishing fast, lots of rods on the deck, covering water, that sort of stuff. Not Elite Series rookie Brandon Palaniuk. He takes that term literally.

Check out this picture Brandon sent us yesterday from North Carolina’s Lake Norman. Brandon’s there practicing for this week’s Bassmaster Southern Open event, and he’s ridding the lake of some “junk” while he’s at it.

“I thought I had a BIG one,” he said. “Unfortunately it was just an old lawn chair.”

Brandon’s trying to get back on track after a less-than-stellar Florida swing that left him sitting in 66th place in the Angler of the Year (AOY) race. While that’s not the position he envisioned himself in after the first two events of his rookie season, he did manage to cash a check at the Harris Chain, and those paydays are vital to an up-and-coming pro like BP.

As always, we’ll be receiving updates from Brandon throughout the week. If you haven’t noticed, there’s a “BP on BP” banner in the right-hand column of the site. If you click that it will take you to all of Brandon’s posts, pictures and videos.

Now back to that lawn chair. We’ve all had those moments where we think we’ve hung a toad only to realize whatever it is we’re fighting isn’t fighting back. What’s the strangest thing (as in not a fish) you’ve ever caught?

Once while fishing for redfish I caught a mullet… a dead one… right in the mouth. I don’t mean I hooked it on the lip or in the gill. I’m talking about my plastic was in this zombie mullets’ mouth—like he choked it, man! And yes, I’m sure this fish was dead. It didn’t have any eyeballs and its tail and fins had been chewed off by crabs. Kinda’ freaky.

Tell your odd catch stories in the comments section. Anybody ever caught a body part or something like that? I’ve read lots of those stories, but can’t say I know anyone it’s actually ever happened to.

A condom on a crank bait. And I caught a pay phone on a worm once.

In the Chicago River we use the “cph” to gauge the water flow. “Condoms Per Hour”….. I set the hook once and pulled up a Huffy mountain bike.

I caught a carcass one time, and it was pretty intense until we figured out it was a pig not a human.

A breeding ball of water moccasins about the size of a medicine ball.

He should have replanted that prime piece of cover. We used to catch saugeye off of an old lawn chair.

True Story- I was out fishing the Fall night trolling bite on Mille Lacs for walleye on Indian Point. I didn’t pay attention to how much line I let out and was past the Fireline into my backing point. A fish hit and my line broke where the knot between the Fireline and the backing line was. I always have multiple rods so I just grabbed another one. Later on that night on one of my trolling passes I caught the broken off Fireline with walleye still attached. I got my line, lure, and fish. Pretty Amazing.

Then there was one time when Indian Point was busy with boats and another boat was following behind too close and my line got into their prop and my Fireline got spooled. That sucked. I hope my line didn’t break their seal and wreck the lower unit.

Hooked a frayed barge rope on the river once that looked like a head of human hair. Scared the crap out of me!

Smith Mountain Lake, fishing near the “S” turns on the Roanoke River section. I caught a man’s hair piece on a crankbait. A few minutes later, my friend caught a pair of sunglasses. We hung around trying to catch the guy’s wallet, but never hooked-up!
