Black Friday Purchases – Come Clean

Can you spot the bass angler in this picture?

It’s the most commercialized day of the year. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, when the stores opened at midnight in some places. People line up hundreds deep waiting for the doors to open. I’m guessing there weren’t many bassers in line at that hour of the morning, but then again, I don’t live close to a Bass Pro Shops or a Gander Mountain to find out. I did receive their flyers though touting their many super buys, some just for the first few hours that the stores were open. I’m fairly certain bass anglers aren’t immune from the buying frenzy based upon some stats I ran across on the American Sportfishing Assoc. website.

Check these numbers on for size:

  • In 2010, we imported about $500 million dollars worth of fishing tackle into this country.
  • According to 2011 statistics, about 9-10% of all bait/lure sales is via online purchases, along with another 10-15% of all rod and reel sales.
  • In 2006, anglers spent $1.7 billion dollars on bass boat purchases, $513 million in electronics, $126 million on tackleboxes, $539 million in line sales, $902 million on lures, and another $2.2 billion on rods and reels.

I say all that to say this – Given all the online sales pitches I saw via places like Tackle Warehouse, Bass Tackle Depot, Bass Pro Shops, etc., there’s a pretty darn good chance you opened up the wallet for a few more tackle “must haves” this weekend, so fess up!

I’ll start by admitting that I dropped $100 on a 20% off + free shipping online offer for some fluorocarbon line, Megabass jerkbaits and football jigs and trailers. What about you?

I had an order in my Bass Tackle Depot cart that included an assortment of creature baits but didn’t end up pulling the trigger. Open water fishing is a ways off here in Minnesota and I know I need to pace myself on off season tackle purchases. Alas my creature baits and long sought after GLoomis rods are going to have to wait until the Christmas or New Years sales offers.

I went fishing on Black Friday. Guntersville was loaded with boats despite cold temps. I intended on taking the kids to a good crappie hole, but you couldn’t even get close to it with all the boats. Instead we caught 3 to 4 pound bass on crappie jigs a little farther down the bank in the mouth of Roseberry. What a time we had. So then Cyber Monday rolls around. Santa dropped an order for a new GL2 spinning rod and a Abu Garcia Revo Premier spinning reel. The best part of the deal was not only getting the 20% off the Revo ($50), but getting a free 7ft6in Heavy Action Abu Vengance Rod and a free Tackle Warehouse T-shirt to go along with the free shipping!
