BassBlaster

Big jumper on Conroe, Worst bait idea ever, 10 ft wimp sticks

If you’re getting the BassBlaster for the first time it’s cuz a bud signed you up!

Today’s Top 5

Hartley whacks a Conroe buttah howg.

Ex-Elitist Charlie Hartley was pre-fishin’ Lake Conroe for the Classic — he qualified through winning the “Northern” Open on the James River, VA — and caught this-here:

That’s a 9-02 on a dang dropshot. Said: “She jumped 3 times. Last jump was straight towards me, tail-walking for 10 feet.” That’s crazy for a bass that size.Caught it on a wimp stick, 10-lb line, 20′ deep. Trick Worm (gp), 2/0 Rebarb hook, 3/8-oz weight.

Believe the lake goes off-limits Jan. 16. Charlie thinks it’ll fish small, even with 50 boats — which of course doesn’t include 200+ spectator boats and…spot pirates.

Momentum could figure in Classic.

Good point from the boyz at the BassZone, since el Clasico won’t be the first derby of the year:

> While only 40 of the current Elite Series pros will be competing in the upcoming Classic, there is ample time for one of the Classic contenders to get on an early season roll on the Elite Series and storm into the Conroe Classic brimming with confidence and riding a wave of momentum.

Riding a wave…like this?

Skeet wants longer wimp sticks???

Right or wrong, Skeet Reese is credited as the dude behind the new 10′ rod length limit for B.A.S.S. What he said about it:

> I spend a lot of my free time in the offseason fishing for steelhead and salmon in rivers in northern California. Steelhead especially are very line shy, and they are very powerful. Their ability to make strong runs can cripple just about any tackle setup. Add the fact that we often have to fish for them with 6-lb line…. To combat those difficulties, we fish with long spinning rods, sometimes as long as 10′.

> I’ve often wanted to be able to use a long spinning rod in bass fishing because I know how much more efficient they could make me on the water. Think about it. How much farther could we throw a tube or a dropshot rig on a 9-10′ spinning rod?

> …we would also have the leverage necessary to handle hooksets at the distance and control the fish better once we had them hooked up.

This is blowing my mind so bad I need a hug from my mom…or something. When Ah-nold is done with this machine, we need to get Skeet on it:

Skeet says Wright & McGill is coming out with 6 new rods over 8′. Here he is testing one:
Another model will have two tips:
Dobyns talks the new B.A.S.S. rod limit.

You may have heard of Gary Dobyns, who runs Dobyns Rod Repair and Mini-Mart in Cali (just kidding…about the mini-mart). He knows a theen o dos about rods and said:

> I don’t believe this 10′ rule will change much if anything. Many circuits in the West do not have a restriction and FLW has never had one. Also when shipping a rod over 9′, the shipping price triples.

> Most bass anglers don’t like 2-piece rods so I don’t think this new rule amounts to much. If it does it’ll be with [crankbaits], swimbaits and Float n Fly.

> I believe a few companies will try it and build a few but I don’t think it’ll be a big deal. BASS was far behind the times with that rule.

In other words:

Worst bait idea ever.

Is this saying what I think it is??

> The patent-pending Last Cast Fishing Lure would allow a fisherman to bring along a deceased friend or family member for a fishing trip. It would also be lightweight, compact, and easily por to allow it to be easily transported anywhere….

> The inventors were inspired by wanting to create a way to memorialize fishing partners who have passed away. “We enjoy fishing but found that some of our fishing friends and family were passing away. We decided to create a fishing lure that would allow them to continue fishing with us.”

So…ashes? Don’t know what’s more nuts — the idea or patenting it. Kermit was like:

1. FL: Bassin’ teen passes on.

Dang it. Police still looking for info. RIP bassin’ brother.

2. Horton bassin’ like a kid again.

> “When I was catching them, it was a deal inside you like the sense of wonder of a kid where you’re looking forward to the next one. It’s like a kid walking into an amusement park and seeing the roller coaster. To feel that again is a neat feeling.”

If true, beware cuz Horton did some damage back in the day.

3. Russ Lane catches a boat.

Dang! Dude who did it apologized to Russ in that thread.4. Cajun Baby on BassEdge Radio.

Line of the Day

The beauty of this bait is that it can be cast and retrieved and catch fish.

Tip of the Day

Todd Faircloth: Deep crank in the fall.

Full post on BassBlaster.rocks but here’s an excerpt:

> “It’s a technique I learned years ago fishing local tournaments here on Sam Rayburn Lake where I live. The same fishermen always caught a lot of bass this time of year, but I didn’t know what they were doing. Gradually, their secret leaked out, and I’ve been using it ever since.”

> The secret is concentrating on the far upper reaches of a lake’s main river channel where schools of bass continue feeding actively as they prepare for the colder months ahead. Generally at depths between 10′ and 16′, the fish gather along the edge of the channel….

> “I prefer to fish the outside edges of the channel bends, or where a tributary creek actually flows into the main river channel. I’ll keep my boat in deeper water and cast shallow, bringing the crankbait down the steeper edge of the channel.

> “Occasionally, just to give the fish a different look at the lure, I may move shallow and cast deeper, but most of the time the best presentation is retrieving from shallow to deep.”

> “This is a good time to catch above-average fish in the 4- to 6-lb class, and occasionally a larger one. The schools seem to be filled with bass that size, not a lot of small ones,

> Todd uses Strike King crankbaits. The 5XD and 6XD sizes are good for the 10-16′ range, and the 8XD is a 20′ bait.

Quote of the Day

My fishing spot had actually disappeared.

Bernie Schultz talkin‘ ’bout zackly that at the upper Miss Elite:

> “I went to the pool above the one we launched out of on the first practice day and found a good group of fish on a frog. I left them alone after that, and then we had those really bad storms come through.

> “When I went back on the first day of the tournament, that whole matted area was gone — it’d been totally blown away by the storms. My fishing spot had actually disappeared.”

Little did Bernie know he was fishin’ the spot of…Burt Wonderstone:

Sounds like what Lakemaster is doing for lake data. Cool with the lakes, but if a drone hovers around my house, granny’ll take care of it:
