Today’s Top 3

1. Official: Denny Brauer retires.

Wow. Seemed like it was coming, but now that it’s finally here, it’s…well, it’s huge. A giant force in bassin’. I feel sorry for the bass in Amistad! (Where he’s retiring.)

> “I could not have done this without the sacrifices of Shirley and Chad throughout the years,” he said.  “Shirley made sure everything was taken care of for me.  She has been my friend, my business partner and road companion through everything.  I cannot say enough how proud I am of Chad and the man he has become.”

> “I owe special mentions to [his sponsors and] I also want to say thank you to Ray Scott for his vision of B.A.S.S. and to Irwin Jacobs at FLW – you both are responsible for the venues that helped me build my career.  Lastly, thank you to Forrest and Nina Wood, without your support I don’t think I would have been able to make this a career.”

> “I will greatly miss the interaction with the fans of the sport at tournaments. The fans are who make this career so rewarding, to hear your cheers and listen to your recollections of events throughout my career are moments that I remember and cherish – thank you for giving so much of yourselves to me, and to the sport as a whole.”

Nah Denny – thank YOU. Love ya, man!

Does Wired2Fish do some cool photos or what?

2. Mark Rose wins Wheeler FLW by 12!

Mark Rose had 71-06, and Luke Clausen in 2nd had 58-12. That’s such a huge lead, it looks like Mark was weighing an extra fish everyday or fished an extra day! Dang!

Mark fished mussel beds with stumps in 21-23′. He used an unnamed crankbait for most of his fish, but also fished a football jig, a 10″ worm and a spoon.

3. A-Mart wins All-Star.

IL has some basses, but you wouldn’t know it by the small-fish All-Star. Here’s eventual winner Aaron Martens’ “giant” game-changer, followed by a balance beam moment that tells the fish-size story:

Didn’t seem like the Elite guys could figure out Shelbyville – which is interesting, more on that later in the week – and then it was Decatur.

Terry Brown of Wired2Fish described Decatur as a bowl lake, name of the game being fishing shallow. Sho nuff, that’s what it was and Aaron Martens (A-Mart) won it fishing maybe shallower than everyone else:

> “Most of my fish came pretty shallow,” Martens said. “They were bank-related. I just tried to say on the right stuff and make as many casts and cover as much water as I could.

> “But you couldn’t fish real fast. It was like medium speed, in 2 feet of water or shallower. That’s why I like that Bagley’s crankbait. It moves a lot of water.”

> Martens used two color patterns: parrot (chartreuse/blue back) and TN shad. He didn’t know if he used the 2″ B-1 or the 2.5″ B-2.

Tip of the Day

Mark Rose: finding fish deep.

> I always try to find groups of fish with my electronics. When practicing I do a lot of looking at my electronics and a lot less fishing. Sometimes I won’t even make a cast until the tournament starts.

> I look for schools of fish all the time on my graph. When you see fish high in the water column, they’re usually not bass. But when you see the fish on the bottom, little white dots on the graph, you’ll usually find bass.

> When I see that the fish are low in the water column and not bouncing around on my graph, then I throw more bottom-type baits: big worm, football jig or grinding my crankbait low.

> If I see them higher in the water column, that’s when I’ll throw a spoon, start burning a crankbait through them, throw swimbaits. I’ll throw a hair jig in that situation as well.

Quote of the Day

Thank God it’s over. Lake Mashed Potatoes and Gravy has been tough on me. I lost $3,000 worth of crankbaits, 140 jigs and bent the shaft of my trolling motor. Other than that, I can’t wait to come back.

The one and only Gerald Swindle talking about Lake Decatur. Anyone want to meet me there for some bassin’?!
