Today’s Top 3

1. FLW signs beer sponsor.

Guess when you need the dough, you take it. FLW, which had been against any “sin” (alkie, tobackie) sponsor for-evuh, just signed a multi-year deal with Keystone Light. (Not PBR or Gennie Cream Ale? C’mon FLW! lol)

Does this mean Red Man can come back?

And yes, if you’re keeping track, Keystone Light is sold in Wally-Marts.

2. Look at this donkey-kong!

Caught at the end of the year from Lake Ikebhara in Japan, weighed 14.77. Uh…mommy, I’m skeert! (From the Tackle Warehouse Facebook page.)

3. Record-hot 2012 means…

From various news sources:

> 2012 is officially in the books as the hottest year on record for the continental United States and the second-worst for “extreme” weather such as hurricanes, droughts and floods.

> Parts of the country such as the Pacific Northwest and the Gulf Coast had wetter-than-average years.

> As 2012 ended, Lake Michigan was barely above the its record low mark established in 1964. Lake Ontario is 14 inches lower than 2011, Lake Erie is 24 inches lower and Lake St. Clair showed a drop of 21 inches.

> As the warming trend increases over coming years, record-breaking heat will become more and more common….

…more bassin’ on more shoreline, sounds like.

2. Now legal to sell largies in NY.

My question still is: Just who is needing so badly to eat bass?

> The new regulations will lighten the process for hatchery-raised largemouth bass to be sold for food in New York state, by allowing those who purchase fish from a licensed hatchery to resell the fish in New York.

> Aquaculturists supported the regulations, which do not provide for the sale of smallmouth bass for food purposes.

> “This is a win for consumers, because it allows our fish farmers to meet a strong and growing demand for black bass in New York and not be forced to export their products to Pennsylvania and Massachusetts simply to stay in business.”

What up with eating so many basses, PA and MA fishermen??

Deal of the Day

Wacky-looking Clunn rods on sale.

Tip of the Day

Ken Cook on catching winter bass.

> I bundle up against those biting winds and organize an ensemble of light tackle.

> I often have a 5-inch PowerBait Shaky Worm or a 3-inch PowerBait Twitchtail Minnow rigged for my finesse needs. I can approach a wide range of water depths as I focus on finding submerged rock.

> …8-pound test Berkley Nanofil line because it is by far the smallest diameter line to use. I add a section of 8-pound test 100 percent Fluorocarbon leader.

> I have broadened my winter arsenal to include crankbaits, either a Rapala square-billed Shad Rap or a wide-wobble Wiggle Wart…with 12-pound test 100 Percent Fluorocarbon. Again, submerged rock is my target.

> I typically reserve jerkbaits for late January and early February.
