Today’s Top 3

1. Ex-GF auctions off fishing spots.

Oh no she di-int!

> There is no better cure for a breakup than treating yourself to some lovely jewellery, and that is exactly what a Waikato teacher did after selling her ex-boyfriend’s most prized possession.

> The ex-boyfriend was a keen fisherman and had entrusted her with his secret fishing spots, but after he fled to Australia with little notice, Angela Potter got revenge.

> Miss Potter was clearing out her garage when she found the GPS markings for fishing spots in the Bay of Plenty and many other areas of the North Island, so she auctioned them off on Trade Me last January and scored herself a whopping $3000.

> The auction received 89,688 views, making it the 10th most viewed Trade Me auction of 2012, a surprise to Miss Potter.

2. Fish sold for $1.8 mil!

Want to make serious coin fishing? Fish for tuna:

> A 488-lb bluefin tuna was sold for a record sum of nearly $1.8 million at a Tokyo fish market’s first auction of the year.

> The fish was auctioned off at Tokyo’s Tsukiji fish market, setting a new price record – nearly three times the one set last year. The tuna was caught off the coast of northeastern Japan, according to market official Ryoji Yagi.

> The meat of the world’s most expensive fish will be used for sushi and sashimi, soon to be served in one of Tokyo’s restaurant chains.

3. Rod tells you when you have a bite.

For all you beer-drinkin’, bank-prowlin’ night fishermen:

> The water-resistant rod is the creation of Kansas-based inventor Ed Hope. It works with any reel, and contains an accelerometer that detects the telltale jerk of a fish….

> Using a single-button control, users can switch between High, Medium and Low sensitivity settings. Medium and Low are intended for situations such as trolling or fishing in rainstorms, in which the rod is likely to be subjected to a lot of non-fish-caused movements.

> Even in the High sensitivity setting, however, the rod can reportedly be carried around without accidentally going off.

Not sure I want to worry about my rod going off….

1. FLW Tour field now 175.

If all slots sell out, that’s $4.2 mil in pro entry fees and $735K in co-angler fees. Not bad!

Tip of the Day

Forget strolling, just use weights?

Virginia-rigging maybe? (Not as far down as Carolina?)

> When the fish are deep in 18 to 20 feet, the best way to control the depth of your lures is an in-line sinker. That is a torpedo-shaped weight with a snap swivel on one end and a barrel swivel on the other.

> You tie the weight on your line and put a leader behind it with your lure. This allows the lure to dive deeper than it normally would and lets you use lures that would never be able to get to that depth without some help.

> The farther back you run the bait the deeper it will go. If you are trolling along and start to bump the bottom then you reel in some line. That changes the angle and raises the bait in the water column.

> With a little practice you will be able to judge exactly how deep your baits are presented in order to produce the most strikes.

> I have run Rat-L-Traps, swimbaits and Rogue stickbaits behind these rigs, and they have all produced when others have not.

Quote of the Day

Now, I feel like we are very transparent when we have issues.

– FLW head honcho Kathy Fennel. Is this actually true? If so, great. Also said:

> As far as our stance with regards to rule enforcement, and more so the way we communicate the infractions and penalties, there was a time where we were more closed about that.

> We deal with those issues according to our rules and are very transparent and open to what the infraction was and what our logic was for the penalty.

Shot of the Day

Not a big tat guy myself, but this one looks different, a stylized largie – I like it!
