Today’s Top 3

1. According to Rick Clunn, the greatest mistake is not repeating the exact cast you just made to catch a fish.

> “Anglers should try to remember to make the exact cast to the exact spot and work the lure the exact same way. First off, bass are often together so there very well could be another there.”

> “Secondly, if you are aware of exact details and can repeat what you did then you might let the lure fall the same way or work a crankbait with the same exact retrieve.”

> “There is a reason what you did worked so it is worth repeating.”

Guilty on multiple repetitions to the same spot. You? (Tip from here.)

2. You wish your jig had polar bear hair.

Ever heard of the Doll Fly? Seems like it was one of the most popular lures ever. Not much used now, maybe because it needed…polar bear hair, supposedly one of the best materials not used on baits.

> Introduced in the early 1950s, at its height the Doll Fly was being produced at a staggering 75,000 lures per day, 27.5 million a year.

> I’m not sure why it was called a fly because…it was a jig.

> The Doll Fly, as many successful fishing lures often are, was simple. It consisted of a jighead and hook onto which was tied a hank of polar bear hair.

> Polar bear hair may just be the best, most fish-attracting natural fishing lure material. It would rival marabou in its attraction to fish. The hair has a natural translucence which almost sparkles in the water. There have been many man-made attempts to match it but nothing I know of does.

3. Man chokes to death on live fish.

Morbid, but maybe a lesson in here for all you daredevils:

> An angler choked to death on a fish after he made a bizarre bet with friends that he would hold it between his teeth.

> The man was fishing with friends on a beach in Icapui, in Brazil’s northeastern state of Ceara, when he reeled in a sole fish [flounder]..

> He put the fish between his teeth briefly. However, the slippery sole wriggled from between his teeth, slipped down his throat and became lodged in his windpipe.

> The man, despite choking, managed to drive to a hospital two miles away…but collapsed and died before the doctors could remove the fish. [Drove himself?! Where were his buds?]

> Icapui’s police chief Carlos Alberto said: “It was a silly thing to do, but he didn’t deserve to die because of it.”

Tip of the Day

KVD terminal tackle secrets.

> I replace new crankbaits with extra-short-shank trebles because they allow me to go to a bigger hook without fear of them tangling.

> Remember that you can’t upsize hooks on baits that are balance-sensitive, like topwaters and small jerkbaits. Mustad offers a KVD Round Bend version for lures like that.

> I’ve always been an advocate of using heavier sinkers than most anglers. If I’m pitching grass beds 8 feet deep or less, I’ll use ½- and ¾-ounce, leaning toward the ¾-ounce most of the time. Our lakes generally are clear and I believe a faster fall triggers more bites.

> The only time I peg a sinker is if I’m fishing a lighter weight and trying to punch through the grass. It keeps the weight with the bait.

Quote of the Day

In all honesty, if you pay the entry fees we’re paying and what it takes to be on the road and you make a check every time, you’re going to go broke. That’s just the way it is.

Davy Hite talking about the Elites and trying to win instead of just make a check. Also said:

> “I’ve done some thinking in the offseason and the times I’ve done the best, I’ve really fished to win tournaments and not fished to make checks.”

> “It’s really hard to not think about it when the last check is $10,000 [but] you have bad tournaments sometimes because of that.”
