Today’s Top 3

1. We searched for ‘flipping Okeechobee’ and watched nearly 200 videos teaching us how to.

Kyle Warwick, a senior at Lincoln Memorial U, after winning last weekend’s FLW College Fishing Southeastern Conference event on Okeechobee.

His next line is why this is #1 today: “It was such a huge help considering we had never flipped before.”

Say huh?! Got the bait – a 7″ green pumpkin lizard – at a local tackle store.

Just in case you, you know, thought you had to be experienced to win a derby out of state.

2. I’ve seen them go from a bunch of good old boys with their shirttails hanging out to a group of polished communicators.

– Gary White, founder of the Bass Techniques seminars, which started in OK in 1974, talking about pro bassers.

3. Anybody can win practice, db, the money game is all that matters.

– KVD telling it like it is for him, to the equally (but different) talented don barone. Talking about bowling. db won the practice, KVD won the one that counted. Here’s a pic from that derby.

Tempted to say something like Kevin never goes anywhere without big stones, but I won’t. Or maybe I just did….

Btw, this is from don’s personal best pics of 2012. Like everything he does, it’s not to be missed. Simply great.

Tip of the Day

Few A-rig tips from W2F.

Seven, but liked these three:

> Spin the bass out – Umbrella rigs with willow leaf blades produce especially well. Deep, cold-water bass seem especially susceptible to spinners. When you’re catching bass 20-30 feet deep, a spinner can help slow the rig down and help lock the bass on its target.

> Let it fall – Folks assume you have to emulate trolling when fishing a castable umbrella rig. But truth be told, letting the rig pendulum down a drop is highly effective.

> It’s okay to have a stutter – The stutter step…works well with umbrella rigs too. Try to envision what the bass sees when you fish an umbrella rig. Five little shad go easing by, so he decides to follow it slowly behind. Not sure if he really wants to run it down. Then for no reason all the shad just sort of stop and collide and act frantic for a split second, then take off again. It’s the trigger that fish needed….

Quote of the Day

My least favorite techniques are dropshotting and jerkbait fishing.

– Last year’s Bassmaster ROY Brandon Card. Also said:

> This winter I am devoting entire days to just those two techniques. The only things that I am bringing in the boat with me are a couple rods, jerkbait box, and dropshot box. In my experience, forcing yourself to use something that way is the most effective way of improving.

Shot of the Day

don barone’s on-tour roommate Paul Elias, showing just one of many reasons why he’s still as good, innovative and competitive as ever. Love it. Paul’s also funny and a lot of fun.
