1. Kreiger wins 2nd EverStart Championship.

This weekend Koby Kreiger (formerly of IN, now of FL) became the first person to ever win two EverStart championships. This time he did it on AR’s Ouachita River, the last time it was 2002 in AL’s Lake Martin.

> “When I won my first Championship in 2002, I had an undeniable feeling during practice that I was going to win that tournament. I have not had that feeling again in a long time [but] on the third day of practice here, I had that feeling again. And it felt just like it did in 2002. It just comes over you – its kind of unexplainable, really.”

2. And he won with…an Alabama Rig.

Not “the” Alabama Rig, but a Mini-Frenzy umbrella rig with Zoom Swimming Fluke Jrs. He also used a War Eagle spinnerbait.

> He did most of his damage from noon until 2:00 when the bait began to rise from it’s suspended locations to the surface.

> “Starting about 11 they would begin to come up and get around any object on the surface. From noon to 2, it was game on. The bass would suspend under the bait – I’d catch in them in 2 feet of water fishing over 40 or 50 feet of water.”

This pattern and others from the tournament will be entered into BassGold.com soon.

3. Mark Davis can reel again.

Wow!

> That’s how things went for the veteran pro at the Oneida Lake Bassmaster Elite Series in late August. He’d somehow lost the ability to crank the handle on his baitcasting reels with his right hand.

> “It was the strangest deal I’ve ever had. I could not grip the handle of the reel,” Davis said. “If you can’t turn the reel handle, you can’t keep slack out of your line. The fish jumped and came right off.”

> Davis was brought in on Oct. 15 for multi-level cervical fusion surgery, a procedure that fused the C-5, C-6 and C-7 vertebrae in his neck. His right arm is feeling much better now….

News

1. Some BFL entry dates announced.

Also the points system is changing:

> Anglers will want to note that new for 2013 is a change to the BFL points system. Every angler participating in a tournament receives a minimum of 20 points, and every angler participating in a super tournament receives a minimum of 30 points. Anglers must earn weight credit to receive points (above the minimum) for their finish. This change rewards loyal anglers who fish all five tournaments in a division.

Tip of the Day

KVD: Small cranks in the a.m.

More KVD secrets revealed! haha

> Early in the day, the water is colder and there is little wind. The bass aren’t chasing the shad, which makes the crankbait a good choice because it’s a bait that will trigger them to react when they’re not overly active.

> Smaller crankbaits work best under these early morning conditions, so my go-to lure is a Strike King 1.0 or 1.5 square bill crankbait, one that has erratic “hunting” actions.

> …spinnerbait or topwater…won’t draw as many bites as they will later in the day when the water warms.

> I want the lure digging the bottom early in the morning, but when the shad gets active later in the day, I’ll fish it a little higher in the water. I’m usually fishing in water 5 feet deep or less and with a medium retrieve, controlling the depth with rod position or line size.

> I have three rods rigged with the same bait, but in line sizes 10, 14 and 20, to help control depth, too.

> The key to finding fish is to look for creeks with plenty of bait activity.

> I prefer major creeks with a lot of swings in and out from the bank. I’m looking where the creek channels may be somewhat silted but they have visible stumps and cover along the edges.

Quote of the Day

We sometimes laugh as we hear about the minuscule details that he sometimes spends hours or even days on.

Brent Chapman, talking about the one and only A-Mart (Aaron Martens). After that sentence he said: “However, that’s why he’s one of the best.” True!

Shot of the Day

This is what a near 40-pound brown trout looks like. Like a Chernobyl mutant! Caught on a spoon called, naturally, the Tasmanian Devil.
