Today’s Top 3

1. MO next state with high school bassin’?

It’s officially a HS sport in IL and KY:

> The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) has announced bass fishing will be included on their annual ballot to start as an emerging activity. The ballot will be…available for a school’s principal or superintendent to vote on until May 1.

> “If 50 percent plus one school of the schools voting on the ballot vote yes to approve bass fishing as an emerging activity, then it will be recognized by MSHSAA,” stated executive director Kerwin Urhahn. “If it passes then the schools will be able to sign up for bass fishing for the 2013-14 school year.”

Awesome! Hello TX, AL, IN, OK, AR, FL, etc.?

2. UK angler steals fish from aquarium, wins derby.

Haha this is awesome! (In a nut-house way….)

> Matthew Clark owed the manager of the island’s St Peter Port Aquarium £1,500 so hatched a plan to break into the aquarium, steal the [sea] bass and then return it while paying off some of his debt.

> In July last year, on the last day of the Bailiwick Bass Club Open Competition, Clark scaled cliffs, climbed a rope ladder and snuck into the aquarium through a back door. [Dude was motivated!]

> He dropped and injured the fish while racing to get his “catch” to the 8pm weigh-in at a nearby fishing shop. The bass tipped the scales at 13lb 13oz – easily beating the runner-up which weighed 10lb 3oz [and Clark won £800].

> A rival angler recognized the fish [from the aquarium] and police were called in to investigate. Clark was yesterday given 100 hours’ community service after admitting burglary and fraud. He was allowed to walk free after taking a two-year oath of good behavior. He will face jail if he breaks the terms.

3. Fish “hang out” together?

Uh…yeah. Sure. Just what we need, some ninny conclusions that the animal nuts and media nuts will jump on:

> Ground-breaking research from the University of Windsor shows that some fish do not blindly follow their school, as many movie depictions suggest, but often do their own thing – including hanging out with friends.

> “Yellow perch have a lot more personality and difference between individuals than we had suspected,” Aaron Fisk, a professor with the university’s Great Lakes Institute, said Thursday. “It’s neat. One thing for sure, every individual is different. We saw different behavior, even among the same size of yellow perch.

Bass were used in the research too, but I guess weren’t touchy/feely enough to make the news.

I’m gonna submit a grant proposal to study peanut butter’s effects on aluminum boats and fish. Or maybe pepperoni. Yeah. Pepperoni.

Tip of the Day

Hack Attack jig tips.

Good stuff:

> “Bass rarely slam a jig. Sometimes it’s just a ‘pressure’ bite, where you feel a little weight on the line but nothing convincing. Other times it might be a slight ‘tick.’ Get a feel for that, your confidence will soar.”

> “Go to your favorite lake and carry one rod – for jigs. That’s the very best way to get familiar with jig fishing and resist using other techniques.

> “I recommend anglers start with a smaller profile jig. It gets you more bites and confidence will build quicker.”

> “The thing to remember is that when you drop down in line size, you should be using jigs with lighter wire hooks and therefore you need a lighter-action rod.”

> “At times rate of fall of a jig can be critical, so don’t be afraid to experiment with trailers.”

Quote of the Day

Never in a million years did I dream that a Classic would be held on one of the lakes I grew up fishing.

– Interesting point from Brent Chapman. Also said: “This is the first Classic we’ve had in our region….”
