Baker’s slow flip hookset, ABA to tours?, ice “training”

Welcome to Jay Kumar's BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o' bassin'!

Today's Top 3

1. Lookit Shaye's hookset!

Very cool vid showing Shaye "sugar bear" Bakers 30-lb Okeechobee day at the Wild Card. Shot it himself. Two comments:

  1. The beginning: Never heard Shaye talk that slow in my life…!
  2. Blown away by Shaye's casual-looking hookset. Either he's got more power in his wrist than I have in my whole body, or I need to get outta jacked-up fighter-pilot mode when I'm flippin'.

One more re: the vid: THAT's what I'm talkin' 'bout B.A.S.S.! More! (Good job Shaye.)

2. ABA will pay your way?

Think that's what this is sayin', from an ABA email about the ABA Weekend Bass Series formerly the Bassmaster Weekend Series:

> The 2014 Boater and Non-Boater Champion will receive an ABA sponsorship to one of two professional tournament tours of their choice. This includes entry fee into 3 divisional events plus expense money.

That's not crystal clear but later in the email says:

> This enhancement will put the 2014 Champion within striking distance of one of two professional world championships of their choice. Anglers will be able to choose the path they want and ABA will support them on that journey. No other organization offers this to the weekend angler from this type of format.

Okay not "engrish," but does remind me of it somehow:

3. US ice fishin' team training…

…this weekend. "Intensive" trainin' for international competition. Kid you not. Got a few pics of what it looked like last year. Seems like all anaerobic:

Haha! Sure it's a stereotype, but check out this blog entry on ice fishin' at the Narragansett Beer website. Check the last pic (here it is):

Tip of the Day

Gary Klein: Game-planning.

> I monitor the conditions on a lake for a few weeks prior to us going to the lake we are fishing. …researching local weather and water conditions on the lake. I can find the weather conditions, water temperatures, and lake levels for just about every body of water we go to.

> I do look at fishing reports from guides and locals for specific information, such as water temperature, but I don’t let their fishing catching styles dictate mine.  I know how I fish a body of water in regard to the current conditions.

> I start to envision what those fish will be doing based on the seasonal patterns. Bass are creatures that go through the same cycles of their life every year.

> By the time I’ve looked through all of this information and thought of the seasonal patterns, I have done a lot towards preparing myself with a game plan for once I arrive at the body of water. The final game plan will be established once I get there and experience the environment at the lake, but I’ve used this pre-event preparation to pack my tackle and get ready for the practice period.

> Having that that gameplan helps me because once I arrive at the lake, I can spend my time fishing. I cannot find the bass I need if I am frantically running around the lake taking in all of the information. If I have a plan beforehand, then I can slow down and fish my way through practice.

Quote of the Day

I always say the guys who find the biggest probably found the least.

Gerald Swindle talkin' 'bout findin' too many (vs. few) patterns in practice. Also said:

> "You find so many patterns in practice that I sometimes try to do too much those first days. When you have a lot of options, you tend to run too many of them. You're like a kid at the buffet."

> "Overall, it was a weird year for me. I'd find fish, then they'd leave. I'd find more fish, then they'd leave. I found myself backed into a corner more and more and felt like I had to pull out some day-2 and 3 heroics to make it happen."
