Anyone Still ‘Rig?

One thing that’s stood out loud and clear when looking at all this pattern info on/in FishingGold.com is that on the pro side, Carolina rigs used to be used but aren’t anymore.

Guess some of that is changing schedules, different lakes maybe, but seems like more a sign of the times. Maybe today’s pros have other, better techniques for those kind of bites, or maybe they aren’t patient enough to go for those bites, maybe something else.

Was reminded of this reading an article (not worth clicking on) about C-rigs, this line: “Numerous techniques and presentations will fool largemouth bass to bite. Yet one that is often forgotten about is the Carolina rig.”

Yes! Often forgotten about. But why? They work! They’re still used in Texas, I assume in the Carolinas. Anywhere else they’re still popular?

I’ve always loved Carolina rigs for deep summer bassin’…though have to admit they’re a  bit of a pain in the rear for an impatient SOB like me to rig up there in the boat.

You still use ’em? Any time other than summer?

I always have @ least one c-rig rigged up in the boat. I’m a young guy and was fishing with a peer one day who never thinks to use one, we got on a shallow pattern and the bass would bite a c-rig 4-1 over a tx rig, it blew his mind. They do work and its something I think bass don’t see as much there days.

Do young guys really use the word “peer” other than referring to structure? Hah! Kidding Mike, glad to hear you’re usin’ and you’re right, basses don’t see it as much anymore.

Here in Tallahassee we use Carolina rigs a lot on the ledges on Lake Talquin. It is financially unwise to throw crankbaits or $3 jigs among the trees lying along those ledges.

I still hate throwing a crankbait though.

      How deep you fishin’ ’em?

Anywhere from 12 to 23 ft. You don’t find a lot of water that deep in Florida.

I meant to say that I still hate throwing the Carolina Rig.

Your dang right I still use the C rig it will catch fish 24/7 – 365. The pros don’t have to use it because of the time of year they fish and the locations. If you watch Skeeter Bass Champs or FLW you will see people fishing it.

What up Allen! Also think the pros won’t use it because it’s too slooooooooow.

In the West they still seem popular. Just look at some recent FLW West results from the Columbia River events and you’ll see that a Carolina-rig was a factor. I use them mostly in the fall for smallies on long rock shoals in clear lakes.

I know that on big time ledge lakes around where I fish, you bet that c-rig catches em good…especially when the football jig won’t work. I have had a lot of success using them on Guntersville in the middle of summer when everyone else is punching mats and losing them on frogs. Kentucky, Pickwick and Wheeler are great for the c-rig between post spawn and late summer when the fish start pushing back into the creeks.

I’d rather take a beating. I love dragging a football jig though.

Is that a literal beating or a derby beating?
