Amistad stunk, MLF goes 2x, Triton road rash

Welcome to Jay Kumar's BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o' bassin'!

Make sure you're followin' Strike King on Faceybook if yer not already!

Today's Top 5

1. Amistad: Well, that sucked…

…unless you're a guy from MN named Andrew "snappin' turtle" Young. He won it with…39.6 (Amistad!) and an A-rig.

And if'n you had more than 10 lbs a day you finished in the top 7 (standings). 15 guys didn't weight a keeper.

That's tougher than watchin' this on the 'Lympics:

Whoever you know thinks bassin' is borin', put them in front of the Olympics. Sheesh.

2. MLF doubles down.

> Major League Fishing will double in size in 2014 by adding two events and 24 new anglers. The new events will be sponsored by GEICO.

> Called the GEICO Selects, the new events will be filmed this year and televised early in 2015.

> The new MLF anglers are: Scott Ashmore, Brent Chapman, Jason Christie, Keith Combs, Ott DeFoe, Kurt Dove, Paul Elias, Todd Faircloth, Randy Howell, Andy Montgomery, Cliff Pace, Brandon Palaniuk, Keith Poche, Marty Robinson, Mark Rose, Casey Scanlon, Morizo Shimizu, Kevin Short, Fletcher Shryock, Michael Simonton, Scott Suggs, Gerald Swindle, James Watson and Jacob Wheeler.

This could mean almost anything, but is interesting. Btw Johnny Crews said no:

> Before I get asked again about it, I turned down my Major League Fishing invite. It did not make sense for me to do it this year.

Hope none of these guys are messin' with Squatch cuz Squatchy don't play that:

3. Bladed jig wins FLW Big O.

Left-Coaster Brett Hite:

> Hite stayed focused on what he called “salad bowls” or places that held multiple types of vegetation. The large flat outside the Monkey Box and Fisheating Bay area contained this sweet spots and Hite had them dialed in.

> He focused on the clumps of grass, hard bottom within the grass, grass points or any other change in the grass line that would concentrate bass. Most of these areas he knew from years of fishing the area.

> When he fished the grass Hite used two different vibrating jigs depending on the conditions. He had a black/blue one tied on with a Yamamoto Swimming Senko for a trailer (same color) for early in the morning. When the sun would get higher in the sky he switched over to a green pumpkin vibrating jig with matching Swimming Senko. As the wind would get calm he mixed in a 1/4-oz swim jig with a Swimming Senko – also in green pumpkin. He had those tied on with 20-pound Sunline Sniper and Shooter fluorocarbon.

4. UA hooks.

Tip of the Day

Randall Tharp's lipless crank tips.

> He’ll have three baits tied to rods: a 1/2-ounce Cordell Spot for when the fish are real sluggish but in ultra-shallow water; a 1/2-ounce Strike King Red Eye Shad for 3-6 feet or deeper water and for yo-yoing; and a 5/8-ounce Yo-Zuri Rattling Vibe for fishing deeper water and when the shad are larger.

> “The Spot is a lighter 1/2-ounce than the Red Eye, so you can fish it shallower. Pay attention to how each brand performs so you can choose one that fits the situation appropriately.”

> Tharp recalled a tournament when he caught 27 pounds on lipless baits from 2 feet of water when the water temp was 36 degrees. "I was holding the tip high and barely turning the handle so the bait was dragging through grass stubble on the bottom.”

> There are days when burning the bait to the boat works well, but more often than not, a steady retrieve that ticks the tops of grass works best.

> In deeper water, he likes to yo-yo the bait, lifting it and letting it fall like one would a plastic worm. “Most strikes occur on the fall, and the Red Eye is best for that because it falls upright and wobbles."

> Tharp believes he has the perfect setup for lipless lures. It consists of a 7-4 medium heavy Halo Cranking Rod and a Shimano Core 6.2:1 baitcaster spooled with 30-pound Gamma Torque braided line. He ties his lure directly to braid.

Quote of the Day

Mr. Parker, I know you're busy, but would you mind autographing my basketball?

– A fan who went up to Hank Parker during a B.A.S.S. tournament, from an article on Classic spectator boats. Basketball?? Also:

> Bass fishing is the only professional sport where fans are allowed to mingle at their leisure on the field of play.

> Rick Clunn once came to a Classic with headphones attached to some kind of underwater listening device. He invited the press observers to listen in. The underwater sound was much like the sound from some 1950s grade-B movie when the mad scientist was adjusting knobs on the equipment in his laboratory.

> "That's the sonar signals of all these spectator boats bouncing off each other," he explained.
