Amistad dead?, #trickcast, Billy Dance Superman?

Welcome to Jay Kumar’s BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o’ bassin’!

Today’s Top 5

1. WTH happened to Amistad?

Facks jack:

> Bass Champs derby down there last weekend took 13 lbs (3 fish) to win, and 5.84 lbs to be in the money (26th place). Over half the field DIDN’T WEIGH A DANG FISH!

> Strike King was just down there filmin’ a Pro Team Journal show with Denny, caught a whoppin’ dos bassos, moved to Falcon.

> Troy Lindner and his dad Al (ya might have heard of him??) were there at the same time and said, basically, it sucked. Check out the biggest one they caught:

> Troy: Everything we’ve seen and read about this place over the years…this is a different lake….

Been dry there, Mexico’s sucked out some water – did they suck out the basses and forage too??

2. G-man’s #trickcast.

Love the #concept:

I KNOW one o’ you bass-heads can beat that!

3. AZ goin’ big on Roosevelt.

> The Arizona Game and Fish Commission has decided to spend $356,000 to reverse an alarming decline in the bass populations in the lake by introducing fast-growing Florida strain bass.

> The sate will spend the money in the course of the next two years, including an initial $100,000 to stock Florida strain bass, $120,000 to create fish habitat, $40,000 for additional research….

> The state will also investigate turning a warm-water fish hatchery into a breeding facility for Florida strain bass, to reduce the long-term task of growing bass for introduction into reservoirs on the Salt River in response to a series of challenges, including the invasion of gizzard shad.

Whachoo theen about that mang?

Tip of the Day

KVD: Get ready for 50.

> The 50-degree mark signals the bass to pull closer to the areas where they will spawn later in the spring.

> To find those areas, I look at maps and pick the places that have the largest spawning flats and the best structural elements nearby. It might be a channel that swings near a bank or a steep break on a corner of a large flat.

> Spawning areas are those flats that have less than 10 feet of water. The more expansive the flat, the more fish.

> I look for flats on the northerly side of the lake because they draw more sunshine that time of year.

> Even though the water temp may not change much, having the sun on that flat will move the fish tighter to the cover and structure and make them easier to target.

> My primary baits are going to be a crankbait or a big, slow-rolled spinnerbait, which is my favorite for attracting bigger fish.

> When I say “big” spinnerbait, I’m talking about the blades, not necessarily the weight. If the water is clear, I like willowleafs, but if stained I prefer Colorados.

> Crankbaits…my favorite is a Strike King Series 5. It’s a great choice on northern lakes or southern reservoirs that have grass where I will parallel the deeper edges.

> I like crawfish when prespawn bass are focused on crayfish. In stained water, I like the chartreuse crawfish Series 5.
