Amish on FLW Tour?, Palin vs. Emmitt Smith, Shaye’s patterns

Welcome to Jay Kumar's BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o' bassin'!

Today's Top 3

1. Merlin fishing FLW Tour?

That's Merlin of Amish Mafia fame, who was shunned at some point…and now we know where he ended up: on the FLW Tour. Check it:

HAHAHA! Actually that's FLWer Jason Meninger, pic taken from a blog post here about how to make $$ on the FLW Tour. Kinda interesting, and tx to jason for bein' a good sport on this-here one.

2. 3 from Shaye "ham sammich" Baker.

Shaye Baker can fish. Dude almost won the Bassmaster Wild Card last weekend, and has done pretty dang well on Okeechobee, including an 11th in a Jan 2013 EverStart. So because of his almost win, and cuz he's a bud, here's 3 with Shaye:

1. Big O patterns – He had 2 patterns: flippin' reeds with 1 3/4-oz jig and Strike King Rage Tail Craw (both black/blue); and punchin' hyacinth mats with a 2 1/4-oz weight and Bitters Bug (black/blue). Used Lew's reels and Duckett rods.

"It was a timing deal, whenever it was time for them to eat. I'd yo-yo it 25x sometimes trying to get them to bite. But unless they wanted to, it was hard to get them to eat."

2. Derby diet – "It was bad. At Okeechobee, you can [order] a hamburger or a hamburger, so I ate a lot of hamburgers unfortunately. But I will say this: Over the last month, including Thanksgiving and everything, I only gained 2 pounds back."

3. Hacked – "Hackney came up to me and said, 'That's catching 'em right there.' When you're doing that in a flipping tournament and you hear that from someone like him, that's pretty awesome."

3. Sarah Palin Sportsman Channel host.

Keep yer politics in check – bottom line is this could be along the lines of when Emmitt Smith was on ESPN. Here's a vs for ya:

  • ES: "I think it's his self-confidence in himself that make him so confident when it get down into the crunch time."
  • SP: Refudiate,' 'misunderestimate,' 'wee-wee'd up.' English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!
  • ES: "You cannot change the stripes of a leopard."
  • SP: "He who warned, uh, the British that they weren't gonna be takin' away our arms, uh, by ringing those bells, and um, makin' sure as he's riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be sure and we were going to be free, and we were going to be armed."

Apparently the target audience is these folks:

News

1. TN: Big Chick bass are hybrids.

> Nearly all the fish were either a hybrid where the southern strain of fish had crossed with Tennessee’s native northern bass; or they were later generations of largemouth known by biologists as backcrosses.

In other words, the big'uns of late aren't pure Floridas.

2. Bass Pro contingency program.

Elites, Opens, FLWs, PAAs.

3. Lowrance Insight Genesis College Cup.

Mouthful….

4. MLFers get antifreeze.

5. Strike King now on Instagram.

Tip of the Day

Billy Dance: Point stumps key.

Article by the late, great Tim Tucker.

> "Some types of stumps are just better than others. You can catch bass around any stump, but to save time and quickly cover more water, you should concentrate on fishing stumps that are positioned on or near dropoffs. These stumps will usually produce better year-round than shallow water stumps."

> "A stump situated on a point should always be fished. Often, a point stump is your best bet for a big bass. If you catch a fish or two off of a point stump, leave it for an hour or so and then try it again. It will usually replenish itself with another bass or two."

> "Also, keep in mind that the fewer the stumps, the more concentrated the bass should be. If you begin catching fish in a small section of stumps and snag your lure, don't go after it. Let it lie, and use another rig until you've worked the area thoroughly. Invariably, stump bass spook easily."

Quote of the Day

I mulled it over for about a month before I finally got up the nerve to call Jasper and asked them if they'd pay my entry fee.

Chad Morgenthaler talkin' 'bout askin' Jasper Engines and Transmissions to pony up his Wild Card entry fee at the 11th hour. Props to Jasper for doin' it.
