Today’s Top 3

1. “I’m gonna catch some bass…

…tryna get 20 lbs in my livewell.” Not the rappy tune “Thrift Shop” but a version called “Pro Shop” – aka, what bassin’ heads do when they have too much time on their hands… It’s good!

Let’s stick with the rap thing for: “Fish on! (Gotta keep goin’).” Homemade vid, positive message, humbly delivered, cool.

2. TX: new new lake lake record. (Got that?)

Yo, yo, yo…. Oops, sorry, in rap mode. New lake record largie at a new lake: Nacogdoches. Deets: Allen Lane Kruse, April 13 (way to skip work and go fish, Allen!), 12.54.

Fish had a good pedigree:

> DNA testing revealed that ShareLunker 370, which spawned at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) in Athens, is the mother of the Lake Naconiche fish.

> The father of the Lake Naconiche fish has deep roots in the ShareLunker program as well. Genetic data showed its mother is ShareLunker 305, and pedigree data showed its grandmother is ShareLunker 184 and its great-grandmother is ShareLunker 9.

Pretty cool and all, but what we really want to know is: How and exactly where did he catch it??

3. For those about to fish…

…fie-ya! We so-lute you!

Awesome graphic from Roboworm’s Facebook page. Why this isn’t a T-shirt I have no idea….

Here’s a vid in case you’re wonderin’ what that “fi-ya” thang is. One of the greatest tunes evuh imo…

News

1. After 1-day delay, Elites underway…

…on Bull Shoals. But not necessarily happy about it:

> Charlie Hartley said he was disappointed. “We’re missing a great bite [yesterday]. And we didn’t fish in practice for the bluebird skies we’ll get [today]. It will be like a practice day….”

> Brent Chapman described his feelings in one word: “Frustrating. It is what it is, but this lake doesn’t get rough. The safety concern is there, I realize that. But they’ll bite today [yesterday]. I guess I’ll go get started re-rigging for postfrontal conditions. Under bluebird skies, the bite gets tough.”

2. Benefit tourney for Mark Pack’s son.

Pack is a pro fisherman, founder of Lake Fork Tackle and Fork guide. His son apparently needs another major surgery, some deets at the link but it’s June 29-30 out of Lake Fork Marina. No word yet on how to donate if you can’t be there.

3. Dee Thomas’ new flippin’ guides.

Particularly good for braid, he says. Dee is the guy who invented flippin’…even though Al Gore says he invented it….

4. Chapman, Howell, Martens will sell jerseys for charity.

5. Frogg Toggs back in bassin’.

Sponsoring Chris Lane.

6. When keeping/eating bass helps.

7. Mo’ deets on Bone’s Douglas Open pattern…

…and rig.

Contests

1. Win KVD-related prizes.

2. Win a trip to the Classic.

Tip of the Day

Bill Lowen: Tube flippin’ tips.

I get the popularity of Beaver-style baits and the whole bait fads thing, but if baffles me how the tube – which has caught more bass than I have fingers and toes – gets forgotten about these days…but not by Bill.

> “One of the best things about a tube is how versatile it really is. You can Texas-rig a 3” or 4” tube and flip it around docks or wood, or you can put it on a jighead and drag bottom.”

> “Since I am always trying to get reaction bites, I think the tube is one of the better techniques to fish. When rigged correctly, you’ll get an erratic snapping or jerking action as the tube falls, and those snaps and jerks that are created naturally by a tube.”

> “When I have my tube rigged up Texas-style, I’ll use 17lb Trilene Fluorocarbon, and a 1/4-ounce Reins Tungsten weight and will not peg the weight. I find that when the weight is pegged, that snapping and jerking action on the fall isn’t as good.”

> “When it comes time for hook and tube size, I’ll typically use a 4” Tight Lines UV tube with a 3/0 or 4/0 hook. Hook size really depends on the cover and fish I’m targeting. If I’m fishing for Spotted bass or Smallmouth I’ll use a smaller hook, but when I’m fishing lay downs for Largemouth, I’ll jump up to a 4/0 hook.”

> “Color selection is pretty easy – I always go by this saying: The lighter the water, the lighter the colors, and the darker the water, the darker the colors. If I had a couple go-to colors, though, it would be the Tight Lines black/blue with green pumpkin tail, and the green pumpkin with blue fleck tail.”

Quote of the Day

The reason the offspring of a non-introgressed ShareLunker are more likely to reach 13 pounds is because of the way genetic variation underlying quantitative phenotypes like size is transmitted to the offspring.

– Uh…if you say so? Pointy-head from the TPWD talking about big bass…I think…. Love to see that dude order at McDonald’s.
